This Old Style guitar neon sign came into the shop with all of the glass broken. I carefully repaired and rebuilt the sign, replacing every piece of broken neon glass with new glass while preserving the original design.

Freshly restored and glowing once again! This vintage VanDeventers neon sign features hand-bent clear red neon tubing mounted on a matte black plastic backing. Time had taken its toll, but after restoration the sign is back to the brilliant red glow it would have displayed decades ago.

From what I could find, VanDeventers appears to have been a bakery in Decatur, Illinois, but I wasn't able to locate a verified street address or historical listing. There are references to the VanDeventer name in Decatur history, but no reliable source confirming the bakery's exact location. If anyone remembers where VanDeventers Bakery was located, I'd love to hear the story in the comments!

A glimpse into the history of neon.

These are original Noviol Gold neon glass tubes dating from the 1950s, many of them still sealed with their original corks. The corks protected the phosphor coating inside the tubing during storage and shipping, helping preserve the material until it was ready to be transformed into a glowing neon sign. Mixed among them are clear, uncoated tubes waiting to be filled with neon or argon gas.

A rare piece of neon history. This is an original length of Corning uranium glass, viewed under ultraviolet (blacklight) illumination. The uranium oxide added to the glass causes it to fluoresce with an eerie, brilliant green glow unlike any other glass used in the sign industry.

Corning produced this specialty tubing for neon sign manufacturers, but it was discontinued before World War II. Today, surviving pieces are exceptionally scarce and represent an important chapter in the evolution of illuminated advertising and glassmaking.

Despite its name, uranium glass is only weakly radioactive and is generally considered safe to handle in its finished glass form. Under UV light, however, its unmistakable green fluorescence is nothing short of mesmerizing.
