🧊 WINTER WEATHER ALERT: Heavy Freezing Rain Expected
The SRMT Office of Emergency Management and Safety (OEMS) is closely monitoring a significant winter storm expected to impact Akwesasne starting tomorrow evening.

🕒 TIMING
Start: Freezing rain is forecast to move into the region Sunday evening, December 28th, around 7:00 PM.
Peak Intensity: The heaviest ice accumulation is expected overnight Sunday into Monday morning.
End: Conditions are expected to last through 1:00 PM Monday, though some areas may see a transition to rain as temperatures rise.

📍 LOCAL IMPACTS
Our community is located within the zone expected to see the heaviest ice totals in the region.
Ice Totals: Forecasts show 0.34" to 0.48" of flat ice accumulation for the Massena and Malone areas.
Travel: Hazardous, icy travel is expected Sunday night through the Monday morning commute. Surfaces such as untreated roads, walkways, and bridges will be extremely slick.
Power/Trees: Significant ice buildup on tree limbs may lead to isolated power outages across the region.

🏠 COMMUNITY PREPAREDNESS
Seniors Center: In anticipation of potential utility disruptions, the Seniors Center is being placed on standby to assist the community in the event of a power outage.
Stay Safe: Avoid unnecessary travel during the peak of the storm to allow emergency crews and salt trucks to work.
Check-In: Please check on neighbors and elders to ensure they are prepared for the icy conditions.
We will continue to monitor updates from the National Weather Service in Burlington and provide further notice as needed.
