Holbrook Vol Fire Department

09/03/2026

Yesterday at approximately 2:30 in the afternoon we were called to a semi vs car accident on highway 6&34 and Randolph in Holbrook. We responded with 3 apparatus and 5 Firefighters. Arapahoe fire and rescue helped with ambulance and one engine. We Performed traffic control and cleanup and assisted with the ambulance crew. We would like to thank Arapahoe fire dept. Furnas county sheriff’s office and the Nebraska State Patrol and Nebraska DOT for their assistance.

Yesterday afternoon Holbrook assisted with a fire to the south west of Cambridge in a field. The fire was suspected to be started by lightning.

The chiefs meeting on their day off. Every member of the department will have contributed their expertise to the building the new truck once it’s done. It’s one heck of a way to do team building.

This morning on 6/30/2026 the Republican Valley Task Force left for night shifts on a 48 hour deployment with Red Willow Western, Eustis, Red Cloud & Holbrook. The team is headed to the Log Road Fire.
This fire was last reported at 1,164.5 acres, tough terrain, in the last 24 hours they have reported moderate to high winds with low humidity.
Our thoughts are with everyone in state and nationally. The last few days dozens of fires have started and continue burning in state and nationally. Everyone stay safe and be fire wise.

After a long 48 hrs on the South Fork Fire by Crawford. Holbrook engine has returned home safe and sound. Thank you to every for your thoughts and prayers.

After hours and miles on the road our guys with the republican valley task force saw a very familiar face another Holbrook Volunteer Firefighter! With contractor Lone Elk Fire. What a small world. Today was busy and tiring with the winds for everyone. They continue to be in our thoughts. Stay Safe

Update for June 11 from the South Fork Fire Nebraska page on Facebook:

The South Fork Fire has grown significantly and is now 23,112 acres. There are 145 personnel assigned, including National Guard, aviation, and ground crew resources. The fire is currently 5% contained.

Crews worked through the night to protect at-risk values near Crawford and Fort Robinson.

Today, firefighters will focus on assessing appropriate strategies and tactics based on the forecast wind and advisories and Red Flag Warnings in the coming days. Very dry vegetation, rough terrain, and critical fire weather will continue to challenge firefighters and their ability to suppress the South Fork Fire. Firefighters and public safety continue to be the primary focus of fire managers as strategies and tactics are discussed.

Yesterday, Nebraska emergency managers with Region 23 issued evacuation notices for Fort Robinson State Park and a portion of the city of Crawford. The evacuation area includes locations immediately north of Crawford’s city center, including areas south of Dodd Road, west of Dodd Road, and Dodd Road itself, at Holmgren Road. The Ponderosa Villa assisted living facility has been evacuated. Fort Robinson State Park has been evacuated until further notice.

A total of 22 structures and 95 people are currently under active evacuation orders. Emergency managers are working with the Red Cross to establish community shelter options; Chadron State College is currently preparing to potentially support the effort. A preliminary evacuation notice has also been issued for the entire city of Crawford.

Residents are encouraged to prepare for the possibility of evacuation. For guidance on how to prepare, visit Ready.gov.

Weather and Fire Behavior: A cold front pushed into the area last night, bringing cooler temperatures, slightly higher relative humidity, and a northwest wind. Strong winds will develop this morning but will not coincide with the peak burn period. The wind will decrease again, shifting from the northwest to the southwest this evening. Vegetation remains very dry. Riparian areas that typically would not burn this time of year are readily available to burn.
