The native common juniper, Juniperus communis v. depressa, that we planted on a back-dune hill north of Saugatuck, MI, has finally bloomed for the first time since we planted it over 3 years ago. Those little brown bract are the flowers, that will mature into green berry-like cones, and will take another 2 years to ripen into the dark indigo "berries" used for making gin!
