"I am so lucky I got to work with writer/director Scott Windhauser twice now. Scott loves music with a passion I have rarely witnessed in anyone. When I send him a music cue, he listens attentively, repeatedly, sometimes even a dozen times or more, until he either approves the cue as is, or suggests changes which always make sense and improve the music. For You Can't Leave, Scott wanted the score to pay homage to the big-budget horror/action movies of the 90s. In terms of themes and motifs, we distilled my initial ideas down to a descending 3-note motif for the mysterious threat, as well as a 6-note variation thereof (3 ascending notes preceding the main idea) which Scott calls the "stalker" version. While we intended the motivic material to feel omnipresent in the score, we never wanted it to come across as repetitive for lack of imagination. James and his ill-fated efforts to find his sister are expressed through a slightly sad, ethereal 9-note theme which β as he plans to fight the supernatural threat β morphs into something more grounded and even tentatively heroic. Listen carefully and you will find that there are 3 descending notes (similar, but not identical to the threat motif) even in our hero's theme as the shadowy nemesis has changed his life forever. We hope that the excitement we felt creating this music will translate into a creepy, but ultimately enjoyable listening experience." -- Edwin
