At Native Tree Nursery, we don't just grow trees - we grow life and landscapes that inspire.

Every corner of our field is a reminder of how valuable it is to care for and preserve nature. Today we want to share a glimpse of that beauty with you, because our trees are not only part of a nursery, but they are also part of the future of our planet.

Eugenia axillaris White Stopper
The characteristic smell of the white stopper is caused by the evaporation of volatile chemicals from the leaves. Generally speaking, volatile, or essential, oils evaporate at normal temperatures. They are called essential because they contain the essence of the plant’s fragrance; it does not mean “essential” for metabolic activity (such as amino acids). But, the flowers and fruits are essential for insects and birds.
Some people say that this is the most desirable of all of the stoppers, a sentimental favorite with a distinctive odor, woodsy, earthy, the natural smell of the hardwood hammock. Interestingly, the species “axillaris” comes from the name for the underarm area of the human body, which should not deter you from installing these on your project.
The exact substance that creates the aroma is guaiol, which, studies show, has anti-microbial properties and has long use in folk medicine for a variety of purposes: anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-anxiety, pain relief and cancer inhibition. The use of plant products has the potential to supplement, and may eventually replace, chemotherapy.
So, go on out there and take a whiff! It’s good for your health!

Flower Story
“Where shall I begin, to tell the story of how sweet a flower can be....?”
Flowering plants (angiosperms) have staminate (male) and pistillate (female) elements.
Mostly, the flowering parts are combined on the same plant, with variations of presentation. Some have the male and female parts on separate individuals. The male provides the pollen, which must somehow be delivered to the female to produce the fruit. There are different ways for the transfer to occur: wind, insects, birds, even humans can play a pollinatory role! Go on, get in there!

Coccoloba uvifera Seagrape Uva de playa

Two Taino men were walking along the beach when they saw bizarre figures fumbling around in the sea grape bushes that lined the shore.
“What are those creatures?” one asked.
“Couldn’t tell you, bro,” the other replied. “Wait, those are humans, I think! But, look how they are dressed!”
“How vulgar! Too much clothing, very impractical for this climate! How did they get here? Wow, is that a boat over there? It’s big!”
The foreign men were frantically stuffing the ripe fruits of the sea grape trees into their mouths. One called to the Taino. He said, “Hola, ¿estamos en la India?”
“What is he saying, bro?”
“I don’t know, but they are obviously hungry. They sure are devouring the sea grapes!”
“Well, it’s a few weeks after the autumn equinox and the grapes are deliciously ripe now. Let’s help them!”
The two Taino men assisted the poor beings in gathering the fruits.
“¡Gracias! ¡Amigos, nos han salvado la vida!”
“I guess they are thanking us.”
“Looks like it. Maybe they will go away now that they are full.”
“I sure hope so!” The two men continued their walk along the beach.

Pseudophoenix Palms

We grow two species of Pseudophoenix: P. sargentii and P. vinifera. At first glance, they look quite similar, like a pair of twins when you first meet them. After a while you can tell them apart at a glance.

Let the photos tell the story. Any questions?

Sabal palmetto Cabbage Palm
Hey, check out these amazingly exquisite cabbage palms in 100-gal containers. 6’ h x 8’ sp.
The advantage is that they are nice and full right now. You will not have to wait for them to flush out with new growth, like those hurricane-cut field-grown ones that you usually get. Another plus is they don’t need to be staked! Perfect for a bird buffer! Or for layering in with some taller ones! Call to reserve yours today – they will not last much longer.

Muhlenbergia capillaris Muhly Grass
The embers glowed red. The logs crackled and sizzled, sending out a pleasant, cleansing aroma. The storyteller spoke just loud enough for everyone to hear. Most of them were on the verge of sleep and had their eyes closed. But they listened carefully.
“At the beginning of time, Mother Earth noticed that she could use water to create a variety of interesting inventions, and so life began. The living things that she had created started to cover the Earth.
“She noticed that the water was trying to escape into the sky. If all of the water left, the living things would dry out. So, she put clouds in the sky to catch the water and send it back down. After that, clouds became kind of like her pet, a special interest she had. As a whimsical touch, she decided to make pink clouds on the Earth, to share with the people who could not fly up to touch an actual cloud. And that is where the mulhy grass came from.”

Bambusa eutuldoides Asian Lemon
This ornamental clumping bamboo from South China will do best and need less management (trimming) in a sunny location with a lot of open space around it.

Ideal for blocking that nosy neighbor with the telescope positioned in his second-story window! It soothingly clacks and creaks while reducing the amount of wind that blows into your garden, and even makes its own mulch!

Eugenia rhombea Red Stopper
Highly ornamental shrubby tree! Suitable for any landscaping use: carefully trimmed vegetational barrier; understory screening element; courtyard specimen.
According to the Champion Tree National Register – as reported to American Forests, the National Champion Eugenia rhombea is in Monroe County. It is only 26 feet tall, with a crown spread of 9’. That is the biggest one in the United States!
This is firm evidence that the red stopper will never outgrow the confines of the space that you provide for it. With minimal pruning, you can keep it at 6’ or so........

The Mariner’s Bride
Erithalis fruticosa Black torch
The young woman sat on a boulder on the rocky shore, patiently watching for the ship of her betrothed which, surely, would soon crest the horizon. He promised her, the last time she saw him, that he would be back in the spring before the heavy rains began and then they would get married.
Throughout the long daylight hours, she gazed intently far out to sea. During the nights, she held aloft a lit torch, trusting it would guide him to her. The summer rains came, and the cool dry weather followed. The warm dry period arrived again. It was now almost one year from the time he had promised, but she waited faithfully. Soon, any day, any night, any moment, he would appear, and all would be well.
More and more time passed, but not for one second did she ever lose her hope. The passion of her faithful love never diminished. She grew old, her clothes became tattered and black with the sun and the storms. At some point, it is not known exactly when, she became rooted into the ground, one of the first trees that you will encounter when you come ashore.

Brya ebenus Jamaican Raintree

Here is a columnar-shaped small/medium tree of the pea family that will add a startling splash of color to your plant layout. When the atmospheric pressure drops (most often in the rainy season, but can occur anytime throughout the year), voluptuously ample bouquets of golden flowers burst forth.
A product of grassy shrublands in the Greater Antilles, it is an excellent choice for hot locations in full sun.
Most members of the pea family have root nodules inhabited by bacteria with the ability to take nitrogen gas from the atmosphere and convert it to utilizable forms that allow the plant to produce new tissue. Talk about self-sustaining! Imagine if we humans could do that! Or maybe some people already have chloroplasts for photosynthesis and nodules to fix nitrogen and we just don’t know about it. You would never see them buying food at the supermarket, would you?

Miami’s Premier Collection of Native Plants

Native Tree Nursery comprises over 230 acres of field (marl) grown material and 25 acres of container material. Field grown trees and shrubs are grown to Fla. #1 and Fla. Fancy specifications. With over 30 years of experience, we are able to achieve superior quality, efficient service and a wide range of varieties to choose from.

By starting with our own propagation facility, we are able to ensure top quality stock from the roots up. Our trees not only look good on top, but they are also structurally sound where you can't see them. Our plants are started in air prune containers, which promote a superior, healthy root system from the first stages of propagation. From this process, the plants are potted, staked and pruned according to each varieties needs with the goal of producing a top quality plant. Our field grown trees are carefully staked and pruned to provide a clean stem, central leader, well-developed branch structure and heavy caliper. Field grown trees ready for sale are vigorously root pruned and bagged in the ground to retain the complete root system resulting in excellent transplant performance.

From Florida natives to palms, to flowering trees, coastal salt tolerant to freshwater wetlands, we are constantly developing growing techniques and adding superior species and varieties to our available palette.
