A new client brought in this Korean-made, Hamer double cutaway guitar. It badly needed a setup, and some electronics replaced. It’s all better now, but just might be the heaviest electric guitar I’ve held…!

Which wire goes to what….?
Customer brought us this FrankenCaster, indicating that the “tone” control didn’t work..! Ya think?!
Seems the previous owner added (hacked-up) every modification they could find. And, went all out by adding Scotch Tape to hold wires and insulate the various components. It’s all better now….🤔 🤬 🤯

What do I do over a cold, and snowy Thanksgiving weekend..?

Build an amp from Scratch…. Ok, well sorta Scratch-like..

So I dug into the boneyard and found this blown-to-hell Peavey Bandit amp. The cabinet & chassis were usable, so I fitted them with Vintage, early 1950’s transformers, sockets, switches & other hardware creating this nice sounding, class-A tube amp. At 10-watts, this amp sounds amazing. It’s a minimalistic circuit featuring 12ax7, 6L6, and GZ34 tubes and all kinds of tone & gain adjustment. Some work yet to do filling panel holes, labeling & front-panel paint..
Might be my favorite build yet….

Have a look……

How ‘bout this late 1930’s Duette tabletop am/shortwave radio….? The cabinet revealed some of its old luster, with some Old English Walnut Stain and Howard’s Feed & Wax. A few pieces of new grill cloth and she’s starting to come together….. Sadley, the electronics are beyond repair. But we’ve got to keep these old Chicago-made radios useful. So…. Maybe pull the tubes and use the chassis to hold an Echo Dot (for example), and have its dial lights be switchable. Hmmmmm….? Smartphone-Bluetooth streaming to a vintage radio. Trendy, yet still vintage..

What’s a repair place without a couple “Shop Cats”?? Boring!
Meet Panther (left) and Boss. These year-old, bonded Brothers came to us this past January and were adopted from the South Suburban Humane Society in Matteson Illinois. As feral kittens, these two were rescued, fixed, clipped, chipped and were lucky enough to be placed for adoption. We then came along and saw the close bond the two shared and decided to adopt both.
Needless to say, “The Boys” have brought us plenty of love & smiles each day….

Here we have a Motorola Model 53h tabletop am radio. Produced in the early 1950’s, this radio was sold in an assortment of colors, was vacuum tube based, and has a very “retro” looking Bakelite cabinet. It arrived in horrible cosmetic condition and would not power-up. As a picture below indicates, the radio spends much of its life in a smoking environment. However, with some elbo-grease and Dawn detergent, it now shines like new. Oh Yah, it now lives again with fantastic reception.

Let’s finish-up April with this Fender Precision Bass. It arrived needing a tune-up, new electronics, neck adjustment and setup. Yes, new strings were installed as well. Upon completion, the guitar played smoothly, and sounded as it should. Finally, a coat of carnauba wax was applied to bring back some shine….
