Facts TELL, Stories SELL

Let's be real, ALL humans are salespeople! I know, I know, many of you will tell me, "I'm no good at sales" or "I hate selling". But the reality is that OFTEN it is the IDEA of 'selling' that is a turn-off to many of us.

The REALITY of how authentic sales occur is ACTUALLY quite simple and natural.

Here's an example....When you are excited about a movie that you just watched and that really inspired you, it is very natural and intuitive for you to call/text a friend to share your enthusiasm. You likely don't have the INTENT to SELL THEM, right? You are simply excited to share the STORY of how the movie inspired you. The excitement naturally becomes contagious as the storytelling pours out of you with conviction. Next thing you know, your friend may say something like, "OKAY, I'm SOLD, I'm going to see that movie TONIGHT!"

BOOM, you just SOLD something!

Obviously, analogies only go so far. Yet, today, I encourage you to give some thought to story-telling in relationship to how we communicate with our fellow humans.

Whether you are selling a good movie to a friend, or selling the need for donations to a worthy non-profit, or you are selling sophisticated financial services, STORIES help us connect with our fellow human beings on an emotional level to better understand, empathize, and validate.

This week I had several team members out with Covid, another member out with surgery, and a 4th member out with family vacation.

Have you had weeks like that in your life when the challenges 'pile up'? Haha, I'm sure that you have! We ALL face them! The question is, HOW do we face them?

As you ponder that question, listen to this....

A sports figure who's surfing career I respect and who I have followed pretty closely for decades is 11x World Champion, Kelly Slater. At 51 years old, Kelly Slater is still actively competing and currently ranked in the top 10 of the best competitive surfers in the world. DID YOU CATCH THAT? Kelly is 51 and still relishing the challenges of competing at the highest level in his discipline.

In a recent interview, Kelly was asked, "Kelly, how have you managed to compete at such a high level for over 30 years now"? Kelly's response was very enlightening. He replied, "Well first of all, I studied everyone of my competitors closely for my entire career. I keep an actual file on each of them. Their strengths, their history, their weaknesses, and their personalities. I have also actively analyzed every major surf break around the world where our surf competitions are held. And finally, I've made myself as much of an expert as possible on the judging criteria of each event AND on the most minutia of details of the equipment that I ride."

Do you hear Kelly's attitude? He doesn't shy away from the challenges, he embraces them. He has made it his passion, his mission and his life purpose to continually seek out the challenges, face them with his habitual positivity and work ethic, and embrace the journey of always getting better!

I share this with you to highlight for you the OPPORTUNITY that comes your way with each CHALLENGE that you face. It is the opportunity to actively CHOOSE to embrace the challenge, mentally, emotionally, and physically. When we make this choice, and when we takes active steps forward to fulfill that choice, we CHANGE. We become better! Incrementally, one challenge after the other...one choice after the other, we become better versions of ourselves.

Today, I encourage you to embrace a challenge that is facing you right now. Embrace it with the choice to have mental optimism, emotional acceptance and even gratitude. And embrace it further by taking physical steps forward towards positively engaging with that challenge.

Hey fellow entre humans!! Today I had to deal with a mistake that a person on my team made with a client. Sheesh, not fun having upset customer, right? But the experience provided a vivid reminder of a couple BEAUTIFUL things.....

1) Amazing things CAN emerge from rough experiences
2) To error is human. To own our errors and take positive, corrective steps, THAT is where the 'magic' happens
3) Humans CAN BE very forgiving!

So our experience today gave us (my team) an extra opportunity to be humble AND respectful. Humble in our choice to admit to the customer that we had made a mistake and to authentically apologize to them. And respectful in our choice to ask the customer how we could make it right to them.

In this case, and by embracing those attitudes, we found the customer to be willing to forgive and appreciative of the chance to be heard and valued.

I've been doing business long enough to realize that it does NOT always turn out that way. Not every frustrated customer is 'winnable'.

But years of experiences HAVE also taught me that this attitude and approach will GREATLY increase your odds of finding common ground and acceptable resolutions with customers who have had a poor experience with you, your company, or your employees.

We CERTAINLY aim for perfection with and for our customers! But when we fall short, remember that your attitude and how you choose to react to the broken situation will be the biggest determining factor in what kind of resolution you are able to create.

It may not be ideal that the crayons are broken. But you can still make a beautiful picture with the broken pieces.
