Jason Walter, known online as jmaw, has published his 15th book, “Love Ain’t Neutral: a soul + FULL journey through the seasons,” a poetry and essay collection written during almost 20 years he has lived and worked in Kaka‘ako.

The book “chronicles the quiet perseverance it takes to keep showing up — through depression, grief and the raw complexity of living,” as the cover explains. Despite the heavy sounding subject, the book is a positive expression of “hope, clarity and healing,” in part because Walter is not afraid to share his experience of dysthymia, persistent depressive disorder.

“Love Ain't Neutral” debuted as an Amazon Top 5 Bestseller in both motivational and inspirational poetry and Asian American Poetry.

With intricate patterns and vibrant colors, Noa Noa at Ward Centre showcases unique designs that reflect the Pacific and beyond.

What sets the company apart from other clothing shops is how its apparel is made. Noa Noa features tapa-inspired clothing created using the batik dyeing method.

“I started by basically using tapa designs in my designs, but then I’ve gone beyond that and used different geometrical designs and simply other designs that I like,” shares Noa Noa owner/fashion designer Joan Smoyer.

It’s getting hot in Kakaʻako — and we’re not just talking about the weather. At HEATED, the area’s bold new fitness studio, the temperature rises to 104 degrees, the playlists pulse with energy and the sweat keeps coming. It’s intense, and that’s exactly the point. This is where muscle meets music and your comfort zone goes up in flames.

Kainalu Poke isn’t trying to be trendy; it’s simply here to feed you like family. Opened in August 2023 by Kalani Iaea and chef Victor Butay, the concept is rooted in community, culture, and their shared love for coffee, poke and pūpū.

For the duo, choosing Kaka‘ako wasn’t just about location. It was about rhythm. They took into account everything: square footage, foot traffic, parking, and the neighborhood’s evolving ecosystem of workers, students and regulars.

The food is generous, full-flavored and intentional. The Kainalu Bowl layers poke, rice or greens, with kalua pork, lomi salmon and a side. The Kala and Puunui bowls lean into hamachi and salmon, while the Friday-only Kanaka Plate is a full-on feast featuring lau lau, kālua pork, rice, lomi salmon, poi and a side.

Then there are the unexpected hits: purple sweet potato salad, an ‘ahi dip you’ll crave again and again, and seasoned pork belly that’s quickly become a fan favorite. Other popular items include taro chip poke, taro chip kālua pork, smoked meat and seasoned pork belly.

Thirty-some years ago, Tom Choy caught the perfect wave.

Choy isn’t a surfer, though, and the wave he caught wasn’t out at Waikīkī or Pipeline. He’s the owner of AUDIO LAB in Kaka‘ako and his perfect wave was a sound wave, a pure and immersive swell of auditory bliss.

“You don’t have to have golden ears,” he says. “I tell you there are sound systems that can put you into almost a meditative state. You will lose yourself. Nothing else will pe*****te your ears or your mind. You’re going to be just locked in and engaged to the music. That’s really what this is all about to me.”
