Lindsey Parsa, founder and owner of Marlowe Interiors (formerly Marlowe Furnishings), started her interior design business in 2023 with nothing but sheer will and a desire to add more beauty to the world.

Located at 307 C Kamani St. (next to local art store fishcake), the showroom boasts quality, durable furniture pieces that Parsa personally vets for all parts of the home.

“I'm just glad I’m able to put my energy and creativity out there and help people in the community make these beautiful spaces,” she says. “To me, that’s a big, big deal for me. It just feels really good.”

Tattoos can mean a multitude of things to people. One person may be getting a tattoo to honor a loved one, while another chooses one to represent a pivotal moment in their life. And sometimes tattoos don’t even have to have a meaning behind them.

For Brandon Tenedora, owner of Kapwa Tattoo Studio at SALT at Our Kaka‘ako, tattoos were a way to connect with his Filipino culture — drawing inspiration from its mythology and traditional tattoo practices.

“Our tattoos hold a lot of stories, and it's taught me a lot about our indigenous way of thinking and things like that," says.

Meet Matthew “Matt” Kalika Ortiz and Roxanne Ortiz, the husband-wife artist duo who specialize in sustainability-inspired murals and illustration.

A modest structure in front of University of Hawai‘i’s John A. Burns School of Medicine is bridging the gap between the clinical mind and the creative spirit.

The 4-foot-by-5-foot art box is home to the KO IKI MINI MUSEUM and it traveled more than 5,000 miles from the East Coast before arriving at JABSOM in 2024. Since then, it has hosted 20 miniature art exhibits — everything from photographs, sculptures, motion-activated models and mixed-media work.

The Surfrider Foundation 's ocean-friendly garden aims to capture and utilize stormwater runoff, which, according to the foundation, is the No. 1 source of ocean pollution in urban areas.

Located at 210 Coral St., the Kakaʻako-based garden grows a variety of plants that change with the seasons. Non-native plants include mulberry, Suriname cherry and papaya. Native and canoe plants that call the garden home include bananas, ʻulu, noni, milo, ti leaf and pōhinahina.

While the garden doesn’t generate enough food to donate to the local food bank, produce grown in the garden is provided to volunteers who help maintain it or placed on a food shelf attached to the garden’s gate facing Keawe Street. Anyone walking by is free to take from the community box.

At 910 Cooke St. sits a small church that is dwarfed by the surrounding industrial and commercial buildings. It is KE ALAULA OKA MĀLAMALAMA, the mother church of Ho‘omana Na‘auao, the first independent Hawaiian Christian religious denomination in Hawai‘i.

The church has been at the same location in Kaka‘ako since it was established in 1897, shortly after the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy. Next year will be the 130th anniversary of its founding on what was formerly called Kanoa Lane.

Services take place every Sunday at 11 a.m. and Kahu (minister) Bettina M. Recca emphasizes that everyone is welcome. The one-hour service includes prayer and hymns in the Hawaiian language with a sermon in English.

Ward Village recently celebrated the opening of its ninth residential development, THE PARK WARD VILLAGE, introducing 546 new studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom homes, more than 30,000 square feet of new retail and dining, and an enhanced connection to the newly completed 3.5-acre Victoria Ward Park.

It also features one of the largest amenity decks of any Ward Village residence, including resort-style pools, pickleball and tennis courts, barbecue cabanas, landscaped lawns, and spa amenities.

New restaurants joining The Park Ward Village’s ground-floor commercial space include Rigo’s second O‘ahu location and the new health food concept, ‘Āina Bowls.
