We filed our first patent 28th May 2020!
Although we have just started, we are excited that we are progressing.
In a similar way to using chicken eggs to make flu vaccine, our technology will allow the production of COVID19 in an ostrich egg.
• Chicken eggs produce 90% of the world’s flu vaccine.
The world needs billions of doses of COVID-19 vaccine. It needs them soon, and affordably. It needs them to be stable for shipping worldwide and produced in safe facilities. And it needs them to work.
The COVID-19 virus does not infect chicken eggs, so this standard method of production can not be used to make a COVID-19 vaccine.
Ostrich eggs (yes, ostriches) are 5lb natural bio-incubators with thousands of times the capacity for vaccine production of chicken eggs. They have been used to produce antibodies for bacterial and viral infections, and now they offer hope for COVID-19 protection.
In May 2020 Avis Bio filed a U.S. patent for technology that enables the COVID-19 virus to be grown in a fertilized egg, in a similar way to the flu virus, allowing the production of viral particles that can be further processed into a vaccine.
The Avis Bio method is sophisticated, innovative and puts safety first:
The adult ostrich is never infected, and the production of viral components is induced in the egg by the application of a drug under controlled laboratory conditions.
The Avis Bio method allows for rapid adaptation to emerging viral strains and mutations:
Multiple strains of flu virus are mixed together each year to produce a vaccine that provides multi-strain protection. We can achieve this for COVID-19, maximizing effectiveness and minimizing response time to new strains, mutations and outbreaks.
The Avis Bio method allows for customized therapeutics, responding to the latest research findings:
New insights into COVID-19 biology emerge daily. Our technology allows for the flexible production of whole infectious virus particles, non-infectious particles, and partial viral components, by controlled pausing of the viruses’ development at critical stages. We can produce multiple vaccine types and diagnostic tools informed by up-to-the-minute research findings.
The Avis Bio method provides for consistent, stable and cost-effective virus production:
The size of the ostrich egg bio-incubators minimizes batch-to batch variation and increases homogeneity of the product. Ostrich proteins can be incredibly temperature and pH-resilient, potentially offering increased shelf-stability and confident deployment in harsh environments. Ostriches themselves are long-lived, prolific egg layers, relatively eco-friendly and produce economically important by-products.
