Wednesday Walkthrough: Pass or Fail? 🚶

It's Wednesday and this week we are focused on sidewalks and accessible routes.

Take a close look at this curb ramp.

At first glance it seems like someone did the right thing. There is a detectable warning surface. The color contrasts well. The concrete looks well maintained.

But is it actually compliant?

What do you think? Pass or Fail? 👇

Here is what to look at:
👉 Follow the direction of the sidewalk before the ramp. Where exactly does this ramp lead a wheelchair user once they reach the street?
👉 Is the ramp aligned with the crosswalk or does it point somewhere else entirely?
👉 Is there a flat landing at the bottom of the ramp before the user enters the street?
👉 Look at the curve in the sidewalk leading to the ramp. Does the width stay consistent all the way through?
👉 Could the cross slope of that curved section create a tipping risk for a wheelchair user?

Sometimes the detectable warning surface is the only thing that looks right. Everything leading up to it tells a different story.

Wednesday Walkthrough: PASS or FAIL? 🚿

It's Wednesday and this week we are focused on COUNTER SPACES AND REACH RANGES.

This time the photo says everything words cannot.

Take a close look at this real person in a wheelchair at a restroom sink.

👉 While this was a long counter, the sink was at the far end and the recessed garbage still extended out enough that the person could not really get up under the sink.

🏞️ MONDAYS MATTER... What if your facility passed inspection on opening day and still failed the very first family who visited?

This week's topic is ACCESSIBLE AREAS and we are starting with a frequently misunderstood element in any outdoor accessible space: the ground surface.

Imagine this: A brand new playground, an accessible gate, inclusive equipment...A city that did everything right...Or so it seemed.

A mom arrives with her son who uses a wheelchair. He spots a play panel across the playground and his face lights up, she starts pushing, and almost immediately, the wheels begin to sink, the surface slows them down. What should have been a short, joyful path across the playground turns into an exhausting physical effort before they are even halfway there.

The equipment was accessible. The surface was not.

Under the 2010 ADA Standards and the ADA Accessibility Guidelines for Play Areas, accessible routes within a play area must have a firm and stable surface. Not just safe for falls but Firm. Stable and Consistently maintained.

Engineered wood fibers can meet that standard on day one. But without a proactive maintenance plan, they shift, compress, and become anything but firm over time. And that maintenance adds up fast in staff hours and materials.

Poured-in-place rubber surfaces cost more at installation. But they require far less ongoing maintenance and deliver consistent, reliable access every single day. Not just on opening day.

The challenge is never just the equipment. It is the entire system: the surface, the route, and the plan to keep both working long after the ribbon is cut.

Your Monday Mission:
👉 Walk through your accessible outdoor areas today.
👉 Is the surface firm and stable or does it shift and sink under pressure?
👉 When was the last time your ground surface was inspected and maintained?
👉 Is there a proactive maintenance plan in place or are you waiting for a complaint?

🐕‍🦺MONDAYS MATTER... Do you know the only two questions you are legally allowed to ask someone who enters your facility with a dog?

This week's topic is SERVICE ANIMALS and we are starting with the question we get most often from facility managers: What can I actually ask?👀

Under the ADA and per the Department of Justice, if a disability is not obvious, you may only ask these two questions:

1️⃣Is this a service animal required because of a disability?
2️⃣What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?

That's it. Two questions. Nothing more.

❌You cannot ask about the person's diagnosis or disability.
❌You cannot ask for documentation, certification, or proof of training.
❌You cannot ask the dog to demonstrate its task.
❌You cannot require the dog to wear a vest.

And here's what most facilities get wrong: everyone assumes someone else asked. And if no one asks, that's a problem too.

Best practice? Designate who asks. A front desk team member or someone at the entry point should verify upon arrival, before the person enters the building.

Why does this matter? Because if you ask the wrong questions, you risk violating the Civil Rights of a person with a disability. And if you ask no questions at all, you risk allowing pets or fake service animals into spaces where real service dogs are working.

✅Talk to your team. Who is responsible for asking?
✅Make sure everyone knows what they can and cannot say.
