☁️ Tech Tuesday | “It’s in the cloud, so we’re backed up…right?”

We hear variations of this from small businesses all the time.

Cloud platforms have dramatically improved how businesses protect and access their information. Microsoft 365, for example, includes several recovery features that can help restore deleted, changed, or ransomware-affected files.

But there’s an important distinction:

Storing your files in the cloud isn’t the same thing as having a complete backup and recovery strategy.

Your organization should know:

📁 Where your critical business data is stored
☁️ What information is actually being backed up
🔒 Whether backups are protected from an attacker
🗓️ How far back your organization can recover data
🔄 How quickly you could restore operations
🧪 When your recovery process was last tested

For Hawaii businesses, this isn’t only about cyberattacks either. Hardware failures, accidental deletion, employee mistakes, theft, and natural disasters can all turn data recovery into a very expensive problem.

CISA continues to recommend multiple copies of important data, using different storage methods and keeping a copy offsite.
