For the past 15 years, I have wrestled with the topic of Higher Power. I grew up with a Mormon father and a Hindu mother, neither practicing. I grew up without religion or spirituality in the household, though surely elements from American culture seeped into my subconscious.

I first discovered Buddhism and meditation via Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind. I then found Indigenous traditions from Native Americans. My spiritual teacher and mentor for nine years was Will Taegel, “Star Heart,” a Methodist minister who combined Indigenous teachings with Christian theology, quantum physics, and psychotherapy.

Through experiences with “entheogens,” literally “full of God,” I felt my first connection with a Higher Power. I spent the next six years seeking direct connection through altered states, hunting and killing my food, tracking in the wild, and teaching others.

My migration to Substack reflects a desire to share a unique perspective on Higher Power: Be the student of all wisdom traditions and a slave to none. Organized religion has many virtues but also nefarious modes of control. Millions are falling away from Christianity in the West because of its flaws. Through our discernment, we can recognize the value of spiritual traditions and find meaning in an increasingly complex world.

Arguments abound about whether God exists and which world religion is “True”. These binary perspectives miss a more significant point – there is truth to be uncovered in all traditions.

These essays, podcasts, and videos reflect how I relate to Higher Power. I hope they serve.

I hated writing this, but you’ll want to read it.

The Regenerative movement has a compelling story.

But sometimes, it’s just that – a story.

The slider is meant to be a reminder to connect more deeply with the food you eat.

Do it yourself or know the farmers who did; visit the land where the animal was raised.

Any story can be manipulated. Take self-responsibility.

Not only do I enjoy meat, but it’s a staple of my diet because I feel better, stronger, and more capable.⁣

But it’s getting more expensive to do so.⁣

After Covid, meat prices spiked and have been steadily increasing. I won’t get into too many reasons why… but here is what I’d do:⁣

#1. Broaden horizons⁣

Most people eat 4-5 types of meat. That’s limiting. My freezer is filled with deer, elk, antelope, black bear, wild turkey, alligator… you get the picture. When you broaden your horizons, much more animal protein becomes available.⁣

#2. Buy whole animals (w friends)⁣

Find local farmers who raise animals humanely and with regenerative practices. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to meet the animals before they’re killed so you can connect with the food. Split a half, quarter, or whole animal with friends, and you’ll experience cost savings in bulk.⁣

#3. Learn butchery & stay ready⁣

Even if you don’t learn how to hunt, learn how to butcher an animal. Each year, Americans hit 1 million deer, elk, moose, and other large wild game. If you learn what to look for with road kill, it’s a great way to source meat.⁣

#4. Learn to hunt⁣

Hunting can be a steep learning curve, yes. But if you invest in skills and relationships for access to land, it can be a great, cost-effective source of meat. ⁣

Plus, if you have the right attitude, hunting can be one of the most spiritually connecting experiences bringing you closer to your food and nature.⁣

“No one exists for even a moment without performing action.” – Bhagavad Gita

Each sourcing decision, every bite you take, and every food choice is a reflection of self-respect.

To source and kill an animal yourself shows a desire to feel connected, be part of the process, and appreciate the animal’s abundance. To know the farmer and understand where an animal is raised is to seek a connection to that which nourishes us.

It’s not always easy to do today. But that’s partly the point – only those with the highest level of self-respect will put in the time and effort.

To do otherwise is to lack self-respect and awareness.

What’s the point of having cake if you can’t eat it too?⁣

It’s possible to find a woman with traditional family values who is also a s*xual deviant. ⁣

Anyone who desires to live a more ancestral lifestyle has to acknowledge the evidence that homo sapiens is one of (if not THE) most s*xual species on the planet.⁣

Taboo, repression, social conditioning. They’ve all wreaked havoc on our s*x lives.⁣

But they don’t have to.⁣

“The purpose of life is finding the largest burden that you can bear and bearing it.” – Jordan Peterson

Taking a life is a big responsibility.

Time and time again men have incredibly experiences carrying back the animal on their shoulders.

It’s a metaphor: carry the burden of taking a life.

Deadweight with organs, bones, fur – fleas and all – makes the experience all the more memorable.

Want to learn to hunt (and much more than that)?⁣

Learning to hunt and provide for loved ones has been one of the most gratifying parts of my life. I feel more confident, capable, and in service.⁣

The challenges required to be successful have also made me a better man.⁣

I want to bring that to you.⁣

Join David Sutcliffe and I on a 9-month journey to become strong, integrated men who can hunt and provide for our loved ones.⁣

Registration ends March 31st.⁣

If you’re diagnosed or suspect you might have ADHD, you might be an explorer.⁣

A new study found that: “ADHD attributes may confer foraging advantages in some environments and invite the possibility that this condition may reflect an adaptation favoring exploration over exploitation.”⁣

In short: there is a foraging advantage in a historical or ancestral environment for behaviors associated with ADHD.⁣

These are our adventurers. These are the people who seek out the unknown with courage and curiosity.⁣

Obviously, we must all make our way in the modern world, not an ancestral one. ⁣

But it’s nice to know that all “ailments” have a gift. Ancestral people knew this.⁣
