When a water loss happens, removing the standing water is a key first step. Although it may only look damp, a surprising amount of water can remain trapped in carpet, padding and other materials even after the obvious water is gone.

Electrical equipment makes everyday life easier, but damaged cords, overloaded outlets and improper use can create a serious fire risk.

Inspect cords and plugs before using equipment, and stop using anything that is frayed, cracked, loose or unusually hot. Plug high-demand appliances directly into wall outlets rather than extension cords, and never overload outlets or power strips.
Extension cords should only be used as intended and should never be run under rugs, through doorways or anywhere they can become damaged or overheat.

A few seconds spent checking electrical equipment before using it can help prevent a fire before it starts.
