Hazardous Weather Update: June 18, 2026

Morning North Carolinians, there are a range of hazardous weather conditions to be aware of today. 👇

🌩️ Isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms are capable of producing damaging wind gusts and isolated tornadoes are possible Thursday afternoon into Friday.

💧 Flash flooding is possible across the state through the end of the work week, especially across the western half of NC on Thursday where the heaviest rainfall is expected.

🥵 A Heat Advisory is in effect from 11AM until 8 PM Friday for central and eastern NC. High temperatures are expected to rise into mid to upper 90s to around 100°F across much of NC Thursday.

🔥 A Fire Danger Statement is in effect Thursday across the Piedmont and much of the Coastal Plain where gusty southwest winds, hot temperatures, and extremely dry fuels from ongoing drought conditions will lead to increased fire danger.

🌊 A High Rip Current risk is also forecast for portions of the central NC coast.

⚠️ Smoke Update ⚠️

Residents in the area of Sidekick Street and Glee Street may continue to see and smell smoke from the recent woods fire. NC Forestry was back on scene this morning and confirmed that the fire remains contained within the established plow lines.

While the fire is contained, smoldering material within the burn area will likely continue to produce smoke for some time, especially during the cooler morning and evening hours.

There is no immediate threat to surrounding homes or structures at this time. We appreciate everyone’s patience and will continue to monitor the area alongside NC Forestry.

Please only call 911 if the fire is outside of the established plow line.

Training doesn't always have to look the same to build valuable skills.

Tonight, members put their precision, patience, and tool control to the test with a game of Jenga—using edraulics. While it may have looked like a friendly competition, the exercise challenged operators to make smooth, controlled movements while maintaining situational awareness and communication.

Whether we're training on the fireground, at a rescue scene, or around a Jenga tower, every opportunity to sharpen our skills helps make us better prepared to serve our community.
