Cumberland County Recognizes Fire Prevention Week!

Today, the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners officially proclaimed October 4–10, 2026, as Fire Prevention Week in Cumberland County.

This year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower!”, brings attention to a growing fire risk in our homes: lithium-ion batteries and the importance of safe charging habits.

Throughout the week, the Cumberland County Fire Marshal’s Office encourages everyone to take a few simple steps that can make a big difference, practice safe charging, check your smoke alarms, review your home fire escape plan, and make fire prevention part of your everyday routine.

Thank you to the Board of Commissioners for recognizing the importance of fire prevention and supporting the work of our Fire Marshal’s Office and fire service partners across Cumberland County.

🔥 Fire safety starts at home and prevention is everyone’s responsibility.

🔋🔥 9-VOLT BATTERY SAFETY 🔥🔋

Did you know a 9-volt battery can become a fire hazard if stored or disposed of improperly?

The terminals are close together, and contact with metal objects can create enough heat to start a fire.

✅ Keep batteries in their original packaging when possible
✅ If loose, cover the terminals with tape
✅ Keep them away from metal objects
✅ Never throw 9-volt batteries directly in the trash

A few simple precautions can help prevent an unexpected fire. Stay safe and stay fire smart!

Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and evening with locally heavy rain and a few strong
to severe storms. The storms will be slow moving, efficient rainfall producers and may move over the same locations repeatedly resulting in the potential for flash flooding. In addition, a few storms this afternoon may become strong to severe with damaging wind gusts with the greatest risk across the western Piedmont.
