Solving Complex Window Replacement Challenges

When Experience and Trust Make the Difference

When the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alexandria began experiencing water infiltration around its existing clerestory windows, we were brought in to identify the problems and develop a lasting solution.

Working directly with the parish and collaborating with HGA Architects' project design team, we provided design-assist expertise to help evaluate the existing conditions and guide the replacement process. The project involved replacing large, monumental diamond-shaped curtainwall windows and smaller pentagonal windows. These distinctive architectural openings required careful planning, technical expertise, and a thorough understanding of the existing building.

Our role went beyond supplying and installing replacement windows. We worked closely with the parish to understand its concerns, evaluate options, and develop solutions that preserved the building’s architectural character while addressing the underlying performance issues.

Challenges and Solutions | More Than a Window Replacement

As work progressed, removing the existing window systems revealed additional conditions that were not apparent during the initial evaluation. Some of these issues extended beyond the original window replacement scope and needed to be addressed to achieve a properly weather-tight installation. Rather than simply replacing the windows and moving on, our team helped the parish understand these newly discovered conditions, evaluate the necessary repairs, and coordinate solutions before proceeding with the installation.

This collaborative approach ensured the replacement systems addressed more than the visible symptoms of water infiltration. By identifying and repairing the surrounding conditions, we delivered a more complete, dependable solution.

The location, height, and unusual geometry of the clerestory windows added another layer of complexity. Removing the existing monumental curtainwall assemblies and installing their replacements required specialized high-reach access equipment and cranes. Careful planning and coordination were essential to safely access the elevated openings, handle the large window assemblies, and complete the work.

Our team’s experience with complex glazing systems and challenging installation conditions helped us anticipate obstacles, coordinate the necessary equipment, and develop a practical installation approach.

Where Earth Meets Sky | A Barrisol Ceiling that Brings Dakota Star Knowledge to Life

In many buildings, ceilings are just...there. They may help control sound or cover up unsightly building infrastructure, but they don't really support or enhance a designer's aesthetic goals. That is not the case when you use a custom printed Barrisol ceiling!

Overhead at the Native American Cultural Center in Minneapolis, a custom Barrisol® stretched ceiling transforms an expansive architectural surface into a vibrant expression of Dakota culture, identity, and connection. Designed by artist Marlena Myles, the circular ceiling features brilliant colors, constellations, and symbolic imagery that extend the story into the cosmos. Every detail contributes to a larger, interconnected narrative that links the stars above with the land, water, and generations below.

The Artist Behind the Vision

Marlena Myles is a self-taught Native American artist and an enrolled member of the Spirit Lake Dakota, and is also of Mohegan and Muscogee descent. Growing up immersed in Dakota knowledge and traditions in the Twin Cities, Myles uses the land as a teacher and brings a contemporary perspective to Indigenous history, languages, and oral traditions. Her work helps Minnesotans of all backgrounds better understand the Indigenous history of the place we call home.

We worked with Perkins&Will Architects (Minneapolis) and Greiner Construction (Minneapolis) to help bring this meaningful artistic and architectural vision to life. The Barrisol stretched-ceiling system made it possible to reproduce Myles’ intricate artwork across the expansive circular opening while preserving the vivid colors, fine details, and precise geometry essential to the design.

Extending the Story Into the Cosmos

In the Barrisol® ceiling artwork, Wičháŋȟpi Thó Wiŋ, or Blue Star Woman, radiates in four directions, expressing the universe’s movement and the Dakota teaching that every person is born with Sičúŋ—a sacred gift that shapes one’s life, creativity, and relationships.

The constellations Ahdéška, the Salamander, and Khéya, the Turtle, honor traditional birth teachings and the protective bundles created for newborns. Cottonwood branches weave through the composition, strengthening the connection between earth and sky.

Barrisol’s lightweight, flexible, translucent membrane made it possible to reproduce Marlena Myles’ intricate artwork across the expansive circular ceiling. Illuminated by Barrisol® Mesh lighting with an Evo-Lite® 5-in-1 Dimmable LED driver, the membrane brings added depth and luminosity to the imagery. Precision fabrication and careful tensioning create a smooth, continuous surface that preserves the artwork’s vivid colors, fine details, and flowing geometry. More than a finished ceiling, it transforms the space into an immersive expression of Dakota culture, identity, and star knowledge.

Connecting the Worlds Above and Below

The story overhead continues through the surrounding mural and terrazzo floor. The floor represents Bdóte, the sacred confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers, while the mural draws on Dakota teachings that connect waterways, constellations, ancestors, and future generations.

At the center, the sacred cottonwood tree extends its roots toward the rivers and its branches toward the stars—embodying Kapémni and the relationship between the worlds above and below.

Together, these elements create a powerful sense of place, with the Barrisol ceiling serving as the defining focal point—bringing Marlena Myles’ vision to life and surrounding visitors with the movement, meaning, and beauty of the Dakota cosmos.

The new Richard M. Schulze Surgical and Critical Care Center represents a major transformation of Abbott Northwestern Hospital’s Minneapolis campus. Working closely with HGA Architects and Mortenson Construction's teams, we helped bring their coordinated design vision to life by furnishing and installing several distinctive architectural glass features—including unique all-glass entrances, custom all-glass openings, and flexible NanaWall® opening-glass systems.

An entrance is more than a way into another interior space - especially in a healthcare setting. It establishes the first impression and can help patients and visitors feel more comfortable from the moment they arrive.

The all-glass, interior entrances create bright, open transitions while maintaining clear views into adjoining areas. We also installed uniquely designed frosted-glass entrances that provide greater privacy and visual separation while preserving the light, contemporary character of the surrounding spaces. Together, these entrance systems support wayfinding, reduce the feeling of enclosure, and complement the facility’s modern interior design.

Key advantages for the glass entrances include:

Achieving this clean appearance required precise coordination of the glass, hardware, operating clearances, and surrounding finishes. The completed entrances appear effortless, but that simplicity is the result of careful planning and skilled installation.

Custom All-Glass Railings: Safety with Unobstructed Views

The custom all-glass railings provide necessary protection at elevated areas and transitions without adding the visual weight of traditional opaque railings. Because the railings preserve views and allow light to travel through the interior, public areas feel larger and more connected. Their clean lines also coordinate naturally with the all-glass entrances and other transparent elements throughout the building.

Custom glass railings demand a high level of precision. Glass sizes, support conditions, attachment points, and adjacent finishes must align accurately because even minor inconsistencies are highly visible in a transparent system.

The NanaWall opening-glass systems add flexibility to the facility. When closed, they define and separate adjoining areas while maintaining visibility and light. When opened, the panels move and store away to create a larger, more continuous space.

Opening-glass walls are particularly valuable in facilities designed for long-term use because they allow interior spaces to evolve without sacrificing the openness of the original design.

Complex Scheduling with Tight Deadlines

Installing these specialty glass systems required careful coordination with numerous trades working on adjacent floors, walls, ceilings, structural supports, and architectural finishes.

The tight schedule created limited installation windows, while the custom glass required precise field measurements before fabrication. Each entrance, railing, and NanaWall® system had to be delivered and installed at the correct stage, as changes to surrounding conditions could affect fabrication and installation.

Because Abbott Northwestern remained fully operational throughout construction, phased work, temporary circulation routes, clear communication, detailed planning, and flexibility were essential to maintaining patient care, safely separating construction activities from patients, visitors, and staff, and keeping the project moving without compromising quality or architectural intent.

Ready for the Fair: Renewing a Minnesota Landmark

Restoring the Historic 4-H Building at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds

With the 2026 Minnesota State Fair opening this week, thousands of visitors will once again pass through one of the fairgrounds' most recognizable landmarks—the historic 4-H Building. Originally constructed during the 1930s as a Works Progress Administration project, this iconic structure required window and skylight improvements that respected its historic character while delivering modern performance.

We were selected to furnish and install new windows and skylights throughout the building. The project was coordinated through the Minnesota State Fair and PPM, with early involvement from TKDA and their project teams to help determine the most appropriate systems, finishes, glazing, and installation details.

Historic Appearance. Modern Performance.

Graham Architectural's GT6800 Series factory-glazed windows were selected to complement the building’s original architectural character. Narrow sightline frames and exterior-applied muntin grids preserve the historic appearance, while operable casement-style units provide updated functionality and performance.

Before installation began, we conducted preliminary site visits and exploratory work to evaluate the building’s unique existing conditions. This early investigation was essential to developing details that could accommodate the original construction.

Solving Complex Existing Conditions

Many openings contained original steel window frames that could not simply be removed and replaced using conventional methods. Our team developed an installation approach incorporating window extenders that bridge over the existing steel frames. Properly sized interior box trim was then used to conceal the window-frame strap anchors and provide a clean, finished appearance.

The building also presented difficult accessibility conditions that required several types of specialized equipment. Existing materials required abatement and selective demolition by specialty contractors before portions of our installation could proceed, making careful scheduling and coordination especially important.

Reconstructing the Skylight Openings

New Super Sky skylights were incorporated into the sloped glazing application shown above. Because of the building’s age, the existing sloped glazing openings required significant reconstruction and close coordination among multiple trades.

Accurate field verification, detailed planning, and ongoing communication helped the project team address these conditions while keeping the work moving forward.

Ready for the 2026 Minnesota State Fair

Window and skylight procurement was accelerated so the work could be substantially completed before the 2026 Minnesota State Fair season. With the fair opening this week, visitors can experience this familiar landmark with improvements that preserve its historic appearance while enhancing its performance for years to come.

Meeting this important deadline required early decision-making, timely coordination with manufacturers and trades, and careful planning around abatement, demolition, accessibility, and installation. The result reflects the entire project team's commitment to preparing the building for another memorable State Fair season.

EntreBank’s fifth-floor boardroom and employee lounge demonstrate how Modernfold operable partitions can provide acoustic separation while allowing the workplace to adapt for meetings, employee activities, and larger gatherings.

We provided two complementary systems: an Acousti-Clear® STC 45 glass operable partition between the boardroom and employee lounge, and an Acousti-Seal® STC 50 operable partition to separate the boardroom.

Acousti-Clear: Connecting the Boardroom & Lounge

The Acousti-Clear glass partition provides substantial sound control while maintaining sightlines and allowing light to pass between the boardroom and employee lounge.

When closed, the two rooms can operate independently, allowing meetings and lounge activities to take place simultaneously. When the panels are opened and stacked, the spaces become one larger environment for company meetings, presentations, receptions, training sessions, and employee gatherings.

From Barrio to Bright & Bold — Americana Is Taking Shape at 50th & France

We're proud to be part of the team bringing Americana to life — the latest restaurant concept from acclaimed Chef Daniel del Prado — currently under construction in the former Barrio location, with an anticipated opening in December 2026.

We are working with Christian Dean Architecture (Minneapolis) and Building Assets (General Contractor, Minneapolis) to bring their project design to life.

At the center of the design is a large Super Sky custom ridge skylight — complemented by a Tubelite curtainwall system — creating an architectural focal point that will fill the restaurant with natural light and give diners a unique connection to the outdoors.

We are furnishing and installing the exterior glazing and daylighting systems that will help define Americana’s exciting new look.

The project includes:

* Super Sky Custom Ridge Skylight — An impressive approximately 25' x 50' aluminum-framed glass skylight with a 5:12 pitch and high-performance insulated laminated glass.
* Tubelite Curtainwall — Approximately 764 square feet of Tubelite 200 Series curtainwall spanning four elevations beneath the skylight, featuring Solarban® 90 low-e coating and argon gas fill throughout for enhanced thermal and solar performance.

We worked with Plunkett Raysich Architects (Milwaukee) and Nexus Solutions (Madison) to bring their project design to life for Brodhead High School (35 miles south of Madison) with a new Kalwall® translucent canopy that demonstrates how thoughtful canopy design can integrate weather protection, natural daylight, and architectural identity. This was part of the Brodhead School District's referendum-funded facility improvement program; the project supports broader goals focused on safety, learning, and facility upgrades.

For Brodhead High School, the new Kalwall® translucent canopy does far more than provide shelter from Wisconsin's changing weather. By diffusing natural daylight throughout the covered area, it reduces harsh glare, hotspots, and deep shadows, creating a bright, comfortable entrance for students, staff, and visitors. The lightweight, durable system transforms the school's main entry into a safer, more welcoming transition space that supports daily arrival and dismissal while enhancing the building's architectural character.

Paired with Structures Unlimited® structural aluminum systems, the canopy also offers a unique advantage: the ability to seamlessly integrate signage and specialty lighting features.
