A Difficult Week in Glasgow

GLASGOW — It has been a difficult and sobering week for the Glasgow-Barren County community, marked by tragedy and sacrifice.

A Glasgow firefighter remains hospitalized in Nashville after being injured while battling a house fire Friday morning on New Salem Road. Chase Dile suffered burns while responding to the fully involved structure fire and was airlifted for treatment. The home was destroyed, and multiple departments responded to the scene.

Early Friday morning, a Glasgow man was also killed in a two-vehicle collision in Barren County. A preliminary investigation indicates a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Timothy Parson, 41, of Glasgow, crossed the center line on Ky. 90 and collided with an eastbound 2022 Peterbilt commercial truck. Parson was pronounced deceased at the scene.

At the same time, the community is grappling with a fatal shooting on Cleveland Avenue.

According to the Glasgow Police Department, Brandon Lee Bond has been charged with Murder–Domestic Violence, Fetal Homicide 1st Degree, and Fleeing/Evading Police 1st Degree on foot. The victim, 22-year-old Ava Woodcock, and her unborn child were pronounced deceased at the University of Louisville Hospital. Bond remains lodged in the Barren County Detention Center.

While the circumstances of these incidents are very different, all serve as stark reminders of the realities communities sometimes face — sudden loss, violence, and the risks taken by those who respond in times of crisis.

In one instance, lives and a future were taken. In another, a first responder was injured while working to protect others who lost their home. In another, a life was lost in an instant on a local roadway.

Moments like these can weigh heavily on a community. They also tend to bring people together — in grief, in support, and in reflection.

As Glasgow moves forward from a difficult week, the impact of these incidents will not soon be forgotten. Our prayers are certainly needed.

A Community That Still Believes

Each December, as our special Santa Letter edition comes together, I’m reminded of just how strong and unique our communities truly are. While much of the world seems hesitant to even say Merry Christmas, here in south Central Kentucky we continue to embrace the season’s true meaning — family, faith, generosity, and the joy of watching children believe.

This project is one of the purest examples of community teamwork you will ever see. Teachers devote hours helping students write their letters to Santa. Local businesses step forward to sponsor the pages that make printing and delivery possible. Parents encourage their children to put their wishes and imaginations on paper. And our staff works behind the scenes to bring it all to life in a keepsake edition families will treasure for years to come.

I still remember working late one evening while producing my very first newspaper back in 2000 and stopping to read my own children’s Santa letters from Morgantown Elementary. In that moment, surrounded by newsprint and the quiet of a small-town newsroom, I felt the heart of what community newspapers truly mean. Two decades later, that feeling hasn’t changed — if anything, it has grown stronger.

As I move into my 30th year of owning community newspapers, I still find myself humbled and blessed to be part of making this tradition happen. It is more than a publication — it is a reminder of who we are when we work together, when we care for our children, and when we celebrate the values that hold a community together.

To the schools, businesses, and parents who continue to support local journalism and who help keep this Christmas tradition alive: thank you. On behalf of our entire Jobe Newspaper family, we wish you a heartfelt Merry Christmas.
