Using the best management practices to help prevent Salmonella in your Backyard Flock?

The CDC estimates that Salmonella bacteria cause an estimated 1.35 million human illnesses, 26,500 hospitalizations, and 420 deaths annually in the United States. In fact, over 23% of foodborne Salmonella illnesses are caused by eating chicken and turkey.

As more people are raising chickens and other poultry in their backyards for meat, egg production, or for hobby, there is a greater need to control Salmonella in poultry and reduce human Salmonella illnesses. In fact, just recently public health officials have begun investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella illnesses linked to contact with backyard poultry.

Producing the highest quality poultry requires regularly monitoring the microbial status at the hatchery level. Various methods are used to monitor bacterial and fungal levels, including traditional culture media methods.

Reducing Salmonella contamination at the hatchery level, along with proper handling of live poultry by those purchasing birds, will ultimately result in fewer people becoming ill.
