Morning Star Fire Department recently responded to a residence where a gasoline can was being stored in a storage room attached to the home. Due to the extreme heat, the gas can swelled and began leaking. Gasoline fumes quickly filled the storage room and spread into the residence.
Fortunately, the homeowner recognized something was wrong and called for help. Firefighters were able to mitigate the hazard before a fire occurred.
What many people don’t realize is that gasoline vapors are extremely flammable. It doesn’t take an open flame to ignite them. A pilot light, electrical switch, appliance, static electricity, or any small spark can cause an explosion or fire when vapors accumulate in an enclosed space.
For your safety:
✅ Store gasoline and other flammable liquids outside the home in a well-ventilated shed or approved storage area.
✅ Use only approved containers designed for fuel storage.
✅ Keep containers away from heat sources, direct sunlight, and ignition sources.
✅ Regularly inspect containers for leaks, cracks, or damage.
❌ Never store gas cans in living areas, attached storage rooms, garages, utility rooms, or near appliances.
This incident could have easily resulted in a catastrophic fire, placing the homeowner, family members, neighbors, and responding firefighters at risk.
A few simple precautions can prevent a tragedy. Please take a moment today to check where your flammable liquids are stored and make sure they are being kept safely.
