Stock car races have been running at Martinsville Speedway for 75 years, since H. Clay Earles opened his half-mile dirt track with a race on September 7, 1947 (won by Red Byron). A promoter of NASCAR since its founding, Earles pioneered using concrete surfaces and attractively landscaping his venue.
