Because The Market Edit is curated, all businesses and products are subject to approval. We reserve the right to decline vendors or merchandise that aren't the right fit for the space.

Payment in full secures your date, and because we feature only one pop-up business at a time, availability is limited.

Grace and I are at a UMaine women’s hockey game today—our first one of the season, although we’ve officially lost count of how many we’ve attended over the last couple of years. And today I’m thinking about—and feeling especially thankful for—Key4Women and KeyBank.

Almost two years ago, I attended a Key4Women event at the University of Maine with one of my other daughters. We received beanies and tickets to a women’s hockey game, and I also came home with a commemorative jersey—which that daughter has since stolen, while Grace has happily claimed the hat. That one event introduced us to women’s hockey, and we were hooked. There’s something pretty fitting about a program created to invest in and connect women introducing my daughters and me to a sport filled with strong, talented women. What started with a free ticket turned into a tradition and a whole lot of memories.

This winter will look a little different with Mustard Seed Trading Co. opening soon, and there may very well be a day you find the shop closed because Grace and I have a hockey game to get to. I’m okay with that. For now, we’re enjoying the quiet before the busyness—and feeling very grateful to Key4Women for giving us a reason to walk into that first game almost two years ago. The internet is down for a good chunk of the area, and it is QUIET out here. (Too quiet and yes, I am slowly going insane without having my background music.) 

Apparently we’ve been returned to the 90s against our will.

To make good use of my time I have compiled a list of things to do while we wait for civilization to reboot:

• Read an actual book.
• Write something with a pen.
• Make eye contact with another human being.
• Stare dramatically out a window like you’re waiting for your husband to return from the war. (Best)
• Identify a bird using nothing but confidence.
• Sit in your yellow swivel chair and play on your phone using cellular data like the resilient modern pioneer you are. (Reality)
• Remember when “computer time” at school meant Oregon Trail and your biggest technological crisis was dying of dysentery. (Ahhh the good ol days)

Honestly, this whole thing has the energy of a teacher wheeling a TV into the classroom on that giant metal cart and everyone immediately knowing the day had been blessed. (Wait, THOSE were the premium good ol days.)

So until further notice, conserve your cellular data, check on your neighbors, and try not to ford any rivers.

If the internet isn’t back soon, we meet at dawn to churn butter.

Tonight was the first night of Faith Driven Entrepreneur at Mustard Seed, and attendance was impeccable.

It was me.

Apparently the Lord and I had scheduled a private consultation. On the upside, I didn’t have to share the snacks, so frankly, there were blessings all around.

Was I disappointed? Of course. I had prepared the space, made plans, bought snacks and expected people. But disappointment and defeat are two very different things—and if you’ve ever started a business, you already know that.

Sometimes you build it and they do not, in fact, come.

You invest the money, make the thing, open the doors, launch the idea—and occasionally wonder if you've mistaken divine calling for a spectacular lapse in judgment.

Our first conversation was supposed to be about being called to create. And there I was, having created something I felt called to do, sitting in the middle of the uncomfortable part of creating: you don't get to control the response.

Maybe that's part of the question: Who are we really creating for? If we believe God has called us to something, is its value determined entirely by how many people show up?

Habakkuk 2:2 says, “Write the vision, and make it plain…” So tonight, I did.

Below you’ll find the video we were going to open with tonight (at least I was able to watch without shushing anyone) and next week we’ll start with the actual first session video also titled Called to Create.

Next Sunday, October 4, from 6:30–7:30 PM, we'll begin Session 1 of the Faith Driven Entrepreneur study through RightNow Media. I'm looking forward to seeing what God does with it—even if tonight suggests I may have accidentally launched a very exclusive membership program.
