To all by computer savvy friends and those not so savvy.

Our nation is highly dependent on our internet working well over the next few weeks. Many nation states would love nothing more than to cause it to fail.

Many of our friends and neighbors are working from home on systems that may not have the latest security applied.

Also, many of our friends and neighbors don't understand all of the do's and don't of cyber-hygiene. (Keeping their computers clean and not clicking on stuff their are not supposed to.)

They make a ripe target for our enemies and our enemies know it.

Friday (today), I have seen malicious cyber activity like I have never seen before.

I know it will continue into the weekend and into the coming weeks to try and disrupt our progress and panic us.

They will continue their social media campaign to distribute seemingly credible information that scares the crap out of people who don't know how to identify false information.

Please reach out to your friends and neighbors and lend a hand in ensure they are informed on the basics and help them secure their systems.

Post your suggestions on how they can ID malicious behavior and suggest your favorite security software for their workstations.

Here's my basic list:

Passwords:
1. Enable mfa on everything you can. (the single most important step!)
2. Use different passwords on every site. Use a password manager. I like lastpass.

Your home computer:
1. Make sure you have all of your windows patches up to date.
2. If you are not using Windows 10, upgrade to it. If your system is not capable of running windows 10, then please do not work remotely from home using anything that cannot be fully patched.
3. Ensure you have a GOOD antivirus software installed. Free AV software is worth what you paid for it. My favorite is Webroot. (Its not expensive.) If you have av software, check to ensure it is not expired and that it is up to date.
4. Don't use old browsers. use Chrome. Its the safest in my opinion.
5. If you have a toolbar at the top that showed up and you don't know how to get rid of it. Contact someone you know that can help. Its a problem if you don't know how it got there.
6. Run a malware scan on your computer. Use Malwarebytes or SuperAntiSpyware. They work great and they are free.
7. Uninstall any unused software that you have on your workstation. If your kids installed Roblox and a bunch of stuff you don't recognize, uninstall it. They can reinstall it when you don't have to use it for work anymore.
8. Open Task Manager, go to Startup, and disable any unused applications.
8. Don't click on links that were sent to you in an email. If you need to follow the link, type it in your browser. Many bad guys will disguise the link they are using behind the hyperlink.
9. Be paranoid. If you didn't expect the email, then take its contents with skepticism. Sometimes, the bad guys actually can write good Engrish...If it has bad grammer, delete it.

Social Engineering:

1. The best way to kill our country is for us all to panic. Nation states have been spreading things through social media, text messages, and rumor to attempt to panic our population and irritate an already fragile situation.

Please DON'T BUY INTO IT!!!

If you did not verify that the source of the information is credible YOURSELF!!!! Don't pass the information on as gospel. The national news is not always a credible source as it has been in the past.

This week, I've been approached by panicked friends and clients who have heard somethings that have scared the crap out of me. When I checked thoroughly...it was false.

2. If someone calls you from visa about your credit card hang up. If someone calls you and its automated, hang up.

3. If you get a "super flashy" antivirus alert. close all browsers using the X in the upper right corner and reboot. (You should recognize a normal AV alert. If not call someone.)

4. Microsoft or any other vendor will not call you to fix your computer.

5. No one will call you from the government and try to give you free stuff. Hang up.

WORKING FROM HOME?

You have limited bandwidth. It will be slower than at the office.

The following suggestions will help:
1. Turn off all streaming of TV's that you are not actively watching if you are a cable cutter.
2. have your kids use only one device. Don't let them watch Netflix and watch youtube on their tablets at the same time. Pick a TV, put a show on, and share. (like we used to do.)

I say all of this to ensure the people that I love and the country that I love, to stay vigilant through these times.

We have to come together as family and do whatever we can to ensure our country recovers as quickly and efficiently as possible.

The internet plays a key role in this recovery. Do everything you can to help everyone you know be on high alert and not let these nation states infect our systems.
