Today as one of Sam’s Leadership Nuggets- I want to discuss a very important component regarding team performance.
When I’m coaching I ask leaders do you have a team or a workgroup? One activity I utilize to help them determine this is called interdependent mapping. I start with these two brief descriptions.
Independence = you get what you want through your own efforts (attitude of I).
Interdependence = people cooperate together to accomplish what we want (attitude of we).
There are some task that can be completed independently and some task that require levels of interdependence.
When forming a true team it require all colleagues to sit down and effectively communicate what these are. Once determined they can begin to put in place processes that will allow them to achieve their goals.
I know it seems so basic- yet it’s so hard.
So ask yourself do I want a team or a workgroup? As an extended question- ask yourself how much more can we achieve with an interdependent mindset?
