Update your W-4! 📝 We’re halfway through the year it’s the perfect time to make sure your withholdings are right ✅
W-2 Employees—This One’s Important 🚨
Your W-4 directly affects how much federal tax is taken from your paycheck 💸. I’ve seen too many people surprised by a big tax bill—or a much smaller refund—because this form wasn’t filled out correctly.
Here’s a quick breakdown to help you get it right:
Step 1: Filing Status
Choose either Single or Married Filing Separately, or Married Filing Jointly.
👉 Tip: Even if you’re married, selecting “Single” can increase withholding and help you avoid owing later.
⚠️ Don’t select Head of Household unless you truly qualify—it can result in under-withholding.
Step 2: Multiple Jobs or Spouse Works
Check this box if:
You have more than one job đź’Ľ
Your spouse works 👥
You’ve owed taxes in previous years
This helps make sure the right amount is withheld based on your full household income.
Step 3: Claiming Dependents
Be conservative here. Even with two kids 👶👶, consider claiming one—or none—to avoid underpaying.
If you end up overpaying, it just means a larger refund đź’°.
Step 4: Other Adjustments
4a & 4b: Leave blank or enter “0” unless you have other income or deductions.
4c: Add an extra amount if you want more withheld to cover any shortfall.
Pro Tip for Couples đź’ˇ
If you’re married, both of you should review your W-4s. Coordinating ensures you're covered and not accidentally underpaying as a household.
As always, consult your tax professional!
