Research has found that alcohol use disorder can become more common in the years following bariatric surgery, particularly after gastric bypass. One review found that the prevalence was roughly 2X higher than at 2 years after surgery, based on observational studies.

And there’s an important reason why.

If food was being used to cope with stress, loneliness, anxiety, or difficult emotions, surgery can remove the behavior without necessarily addressing the underlying reason behind it.

That doesn’t mean something is wrong with you, or that the surgery “failed.” It means the psychological side of weight loss deserves just as much attention as the physical side.

Recognizing these changes early and having the right support in place can make a huge difference.
