College students are big news today. They might have issues with paying back loans later in life, but at the start of thier school days, they represent a consumer force to be reckoned with. According to the national Retail Federation, Back-to-school spending for college students averaged nearly $1000 --- that's a lot of rolling papers!
So how do you tap into that demographic? Students do rely on their smartphones to engage with digital media — but they still crave to be seen “in-the-wild” and they appreciate the experience of shopping in-store.
You can leverage this see-me desire by creating rich in-store experiences that will draw college students in and prompt them to share their experiences on social media — think wall murals, branded hashtags displayed in-store, and fun store design that begs to be shared.
One way to add a fun and interactive element to your shop is with a gumball machine from Roll the Life (). Customers drop in two quarters and out pops a gumball capsule with 8 paper rolling tips. The tips come in a variety of colors, but a smart idea would be to use school colors to attract students.
There's always a big man on campus, and the way to get that guy's (or gal's) attention is with a display of acrylic water pipes from Headway Designs. The colorful pipes range in size from 6" all the way up to the 6 foot tall Big Boy Solo.
While it might seem counterproductive to offer free wi-fi inside your store, don't worry that students are using the internet to comparision shop. Texting and social media accounts for 85% of student communication, so it's more likely their posting selifes with the products they just bought. Encourage them to tag your store so their friends will know where to shop.
Speaking of friends, college students are not only loyal to their school, but also to local businesses. Loyalty programs are an amazing way to give your customers the feeling that they are special. A loyalty card that comes with perks and benefits after they purchase a certain amount is a great way to make friends with students and get them to come back for more. Some of the most popular loyalty card apps for small businesses include Fivestars, BellyCard, Stamp Me, and Loopy Loyalty which allows your to create custom branded digital punch cards that access the native capabilities of Apple Wallet and Google Wallet.
