High-tech shrimp farming brings high profits in Western.

From the beginning of the year until now, D**g Thap province has brought the production value of pangasius to 1,407 billion d**g, up by 9.01% over the same period in 2020, equivalent to 116 billion d**g. The price of white pangasius size of 0.7-0.8 kg/pc is at more than 21,000 VND/kg. The reason for the increase in raw pangasius price is that the import markets have many positive signals; in which, the markets of China, America, EU, Southeast Asia ... started to have more orders. In addition, the COVID-19 epidemic is gradually being controlled, pangasius export has been operating stably, so the quantity of goods from pangasius processing enterprises has been consumed again. Up to now, many agricultural products of D**g Thap exported abroad and having access to markets with high standards such as the US, Europe, Japan, Korea ... have contributed to diversifying export products. and increase product value. In the first quarter of 2021, many key export products of the province all achiev

The Mekong Delta province of Bac Lieu plans to expand super - intensive shrimp farming as it is sustainable and offers high production value.
The province, which is one of the country’s leading areas where shrimp is bred with advanced techniques, had more than 25,800ha of super-intensive and intensive shrimp farming areas last year.
Super- intensive shrimp farming offers a high yield of 40 – 50 tonnes per hectare per crop and a profit of 1 billion VND (43,200 USD) per hectare for three shrimp crops a year. It has a success rate of 80 – 90 percent.
It uses shrimp breeding ponds with oxygenation facilities, anti-sunlight nets and plastic sheets on the bed.
The province has established a 418ha hi-tech agriculture zone for shrimp development in Bac Lieu city’s Hiep Thanh commune.
About 90 percent of the construction of the hi-tech agriculture zone has been completed, and more than 30 companies have registered to invest in the zone.
In the zone, four companies and 76 households breed white-legged shrimp under the super-intensive farming model on more than 160 ha.
The zone will also produce shrimp fry and shrimp food to serve demand. Shrimp fry producers now produce 32 – 35 billion fry of white- legged shrimp and black tiger shrimp a year.
Last year, aquaculture production faced challenges because of drought, saltwater intrusion and the COVID-19 pandemic, but its output and yield rose after the province took preventive measures and set up proper breeding schedules.
The province’s aquaculture output and seafood catch reached 400,000 tonnes last year, including 200,000 tonnes of shrimp.
Last year, the province’s fishery sector accounted for 58 percent of its agriculture production value.
Luu Hoang Ly, director of the local Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said: “To achieve better results in aquaculture production this year, the province has invested more in infrastructure for shrimp cultivation, properly regulating water resources for shrimp cultivation and strictly managing input materials and shrimp fry for shrimp cultivation.”
Because saltwater intrusion in the ongoing dry season could occur in canals and ponds, shrimp breeders using super-intensive and intensive farming models should store fresh water in ponds and mix the fresh water with saline water in canals used for breeding shrimp, he said.
Shrimp breeders should not release shrimp for breeding this month because of prolonged hot weather. Off-season rains could also cause sudden changes in the breeding environment, he added.
To destroy disease pathogens and improve production efficiency, breeders should schedule a break between two shrimp crops, he said.
Besides super – intensive and intensive shrimp farming models, the province has developed other environmentally friendly models like rice – shrimp and shrimp – forest farming to produce clean shrimp for export and local consumption.
The province exported more than $800 million of seafood last year. It targets harvesting 414,400 tonnes of aquatic products from aquaculture and catches this year, up 3.6 percent against last year, according to the department.
With a coastline of more than 56km, Bac Lieu has high potential for shrimp cultivation, especially brackish water shrimp. The province has more than 136,000ha of shrimp cultivation area.

Vietnam's tuna exports to the US recovered

After a continuous decline in the first 2 months of 2021, Vietnam's tuna exports to the US recovered in March. According to statistics of Vietnam Customs, in March alone, Vietnam exported nearly 31 million USD from tuna products, up 33% over the same period in 2020, bringing the total export value in the first 3 months of 2021 to more than 63 million USD, up 2.1%.

In early 2021, the crisis of lack of containers caused the cost of transporting frozen seafood exports to the US to skyrocket, many orders could not be fulfilled, or delivery was not on time… Besides, the US importers often buy goods at FOB (shipping on board) prices, so many importers have delayed orders due to damage. This is one of the reasons why Vietnam's tuna exports to the US declined in the first 2 months of the year.

In early 2021, because the Covid-19 epidemic continued to break out in the US, the country's imports of processed and canned tuna continued to increase. According to statistics from the World Trade Center (ITC), US imports of processed and canned tuna in the first two months of 2021 raised 21% in volume over the same period in 2020, while imports of fresh and frozen tuna from the US in the first 2 months of 2021 were up 21% in volume compared to the same period in 2020.

This trend has also affected Vietnam's tuna exports to the US market. Vietnam's processed and canned tuna exports to the US continued to increase, while fresh and frozen tuna exports decreased.

Compared to the same period last year, Vietnamese tuna products exported to the US have lower prices. The price of frozen steamed tuna loin from Vietnam exported to the US fluctuates at $6.4 - 6.6 USD/kg. And frozen tuna meat/fillets ranged at $9.3 - 9.9/kg.

According to statistics from the International Trade Center (ITC), in the US frozen tuna meat/fillet market segment in the first months of 2021, Vietnamese products have good competitive prices and are relatively stable compared with countries such as the Philippines, Indonesia or Thailand.

As for processed and canned tuna products, this year, the average export price of Vietnamese products tends to be higher than that of rival countries such as Thailand, Ecuador or Mauritius. The average import price of these products from Vietnam to the US is the highest among the four main suppliers. This is helping Ecuador to gain market share from Vietnam in this market segment in the US.

Squids are marine cephalopods of the order Teuthida which comprise around 300 species and Loligo chinensis and Loligo edulis are common in Vietnam territerial water.Squids live in the depth of less than 100m from the surface and are sensitive with change of hyrologic condition, climate and light, hence their migration is based on the season, day and night.

In Vietnam squids are caught from the north to central and south provinces.
Season: squid could be caught whole year round. However there are two main fishing seasons that is northern (December to April) and Southern season (June to September)

Catching method: by using light resource such as squid long line, luring liftnet, liftnet, squids falling net. Strong light intensity is used to attract squids since these species are light-oriented. Squids often concentrate at high density within the light halo. As a result, Viet Nam as well as many other countries often uses fishing techniques together with light tackle to catch squids.

South Korea increased imports of frozen octopus from Vietnam.

After increasing in January, Vietnam's cephalopod exports to South Korea in February 2021 decreased by 21% compared to the same period in 2020. In the first two months of 2021, Vietnam's cephalopod exports were 3% lower than the same period in 2020, reaching 27 million USD.

According to the statistics of Vietnam Customs, in the first 2 months of this year, frozen octopus products accounted for 78% of the total export value of cephalopod to Korea. Compared to the same period in 2020, the export of octopus products to this market has increased. On the contrary, exports of squid products, except for other processed squid, to this market decreased year-on-year.

Korea's imports of cephalopod from countries around the world in the first 2 months of this year also dropped 11% in value. Korea is importing cephalopod from 8 countries around the world. In which, China, Peru and Vietnam are the three largest suppliers for this market.

However, in the frozen octopus market segment, Vietnam is not a major source for this market. The main exporters of frozen octopus are Mauritius, China, the Philippines and Venezuela.

Similar to Vietnam, in February Korea's imports of frozen octopus from other countries decreased. The value of Korea's frozen octopus imports this month reached 280 million USD, down by 82% year on year and the average import price in February was 5.76 USD / kg, down by 7% compared to the same period last year at 6.22 USD/kg compared to February 2020.

Vietnam tuna exports are not likely to recover in 2021.

In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic spread out all over the world that had a tremendous impact on the world tuna industry in general and the Vietnamese tuna industry in particular. Despite the difficulties, Vietnamese tuna processing and exporting enterprises have still been making efforts to overcome drawbacks.
Looking back at tuna exports in 2020

According to statistics of Vietnam Customs, in the first 11 months of 2020, Vietnam's tuna exports reached nearly 600 million USD, down 11% compared to the same period in 2019. In 2020, international markets had to suspend the trade activities in response to the pandemics. In some places, they applied the shutdown measures on restaurants, cafeterias, and crowded places. This has resulted in a decrease in consumption of tuna, especially fresh and frozen tuna products, in markets, the demand for long-preserved foods such as canned tuna in some markets roared.

This has a great impact on Vietnam's tuna exports. Vietnam's exports of fresh and frozen tuna contracted by 26% compared to the same period in 2019. Meanwhile, exports of processed and canned tuna products rose by 9%. This growth was mainly due to the growth in the export of canned tuna products.

Currently, Vietnamese tuna products have been exported to 106 markets around the world. Due to the impact of Covid-19, Vietnam's tuna exports to most major markets fell over the same period.

The US, EU, ASEAN, and Japan continued to be the four largest tuna importers of Vietnam. Tuna exports to the US and Southeast Asia tended to decrease over the same period in 2019 while exports to the EU and Japan climbed slightly over the same period. Notably, Vietnam's tuna exports to the EU after a period of negative growth have reversed thanks to the impact of the Free Trade Agreement between the European Union and Vietnam (EVFTA).

Besides, tuna exports to some other export markets have been showing positive growth, namely, Egypt and the Middle East. However, governments of the countries have taken measures to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic such as issuing a curfew at night, banning crowded gatherings, closing restaurants, leading to economic problems severely affected, the demand for food decreased. Moreover, Egypt has the policy to reduce imports and increase exports to narrow the trade deficit. There was a time when the Industry Committee of the Egyptian Parliament called for the government to suspend the import of frozen fish due to concerns about possible transmission of the coronavirus in this product.

In addition, the slow consumption in the market recently forced them to cut many new orders while the payback period was prolonged. This has made Vietnam's tuna exports to this market unstable and tended to slow down at the end of the year.

At present, the disease situation of Covid-19 in the markets has not been controlled, moreover, there has been a risk of a rebound, so it is expected that the world tuna market cannot recover.

In the US market, the growth in re-importing Chinese cheap canned tuna products into the US is contributing to the competition in this market segment. Moreover, the demand for sustainable tuna products in the US has been tended to increase. Many major importers like Walmart, Bumble Bee, or Chicken of the Sea have made moves towards finding sustainable sources of tuna, such as making a commitment to supply 100% of Chunk light products certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)… This is expected to reduce the need to import conventional tuna products…

In the EU market, EVFTA will continue to be a driver for Vietnam's exports of tuna products, such as canned tuna, fresh and frozen tuna, to the EU market in 2021. However, frozen steamed tuna loin products (HS16), one of the key export products of Vietnam in the first months of the year, is expected to decline. Because these products from Vietnam to the EU have enjoyed tariff preferences as agreed in EVFTA, they are not exempt from tax to 0% according to the autonomous tariff rate quota (ATQ) when exporting to the EU. Meanwhile, in 2021, the EU Parliament increased the import quota for this product group according to the ATQ to 35,000 MT, which makes China's tuna export businesses benefit. Competition in this segment of the EU is expected to increase.
