Building to the sky: the challenges behind skyscrapers🛕🌏

Skyscrapers are true marvels of modern engineering and architecture, but building them is no easy task. There are many technical and logistical challenges that must be overcome to achieve a safe, functional and aesthetically appealing building.😎

The main challenges are:

✅Altitude and temperature: the world's tallest buildings are often in desert regions of the Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia, where temperatures can be extremely high. In addition, a very large proportion of their overall size is above their neighbors, so there is nothing to block the sun.

✅Utility systems: with so many floors and so many people, a very sophisticated utility infrastructure is needed to keep the building functioning effectively. Ventilation, lighting, heating and air conditioning systems must be carefully designed to be efficient and effective.

✅Safety: Evacuation and fire suppression systems must be robust and reliable, and the building must be designed to withstand earthquakes and other natural disasters.

✅Logistics: Materials and equipment must be transported to great heights, and large numbers of workers and contractors must be coordinated to work together effectively. Space is limited in urban areas, so careful planning is required.

Let's transform our cities with sustainable urban drainage strategies! 💧🌿

Why is it important? Because climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of rainfall, which can lead to flooding and damage to urban infrastructure. In addition, conventional drainage in cities contributes to water pollution and a decrease in biodiversity.

There are sustainable solutions that we can implement in our cities. Some of them are:

🌿 Permeable pavements: they allow water to filter through them and infiltrate into the ground.
💧 Infiltration reservoir: these are subway structures that temporarily store rainwater and gradually release it to the drainage system.
🌿 Green gutters: these are shallow ditches that are planted with vegetation to filter rainwater.
💧 Infiltration trenches: these are shallow gravel-filled trenches that allow water to percolate into the ground.
🌿 Bioretention areas: are areas planted with vegetation that filter rainwater and temporarily retain it.
💧 Retention reservoir: these are subway structures that temporarily retain rainwater and gradually release it to the drainage system.
🌿 Artificial wetlands: are areas planted with aquatic vegetation that filter and purify rainwater.
💧 Green roofs: are roofs covered with vegetation that retain rainwater and reduce the amount of water flowing into the drainage system.

These strategies not only help prevent flooding and reduce water pollution, but can also improve the quality of life for city dwellers by reducing urban temperatures.

The Chrysler Building: an Art Deco architectural jewel in the Big Apple🛕

There's no doubt that the Chrysler Building is one of New York's most iconic buildings!💬 This iconic 77-story skyscraper is known for its distinctive stainless steel spire and Art Deco design. Here are some of its architectural features, history and things that stand out about its construction:

🔹The Chrysler Building was built in 1930 and was the tallest building in the world for a brief period before being surpassed by the Empire State Building.
🔹It was designed by architect William Van Alen and commissioned by Walter P. Chrysler, founder of the Chrysler automobile company.
🔹The design of the Chrysler Building is a mixture of architectural styles, with an Art Deco base and an Egyptian-influenced stainless steel spire. The spire is composed of seven stainless steel arches that gradually taper upward, culminating in a stainless steel pinnacle.
🔹The main entrance to the building features an impressive bronze door and glass canopy. The lobby is also impressive, with Italian marble, granite walls and ceilings decorated with Art Deco motifs.
🔹The building was in competition with another skyscraper, the Bank of Manhattan Trust Building, for the title of tallest building in the world.

Van Alen designed a spire that could be assembled inside the building in secret, so that the Bank of Manhattan Trust could not copy his design.😎

Hey everyone, today we celebrate the 245th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. It's a day to remember the bravery and sacrifice of our founding fathers who fought for our freedom. ✅Thick: Refers to the thickness of the brick, that is, its measurement in the direction perpendicular to the faces.
✅Board: It is the wide face of the brick, which is exposed to the outside.
✅Testa: It is the shortest face of the brick, which is perpendicular to the board.
✅Edge: It is the edge of the brick, which joins the board with the face.

Today I want to talk to you about engineering and a famous quote by Henry Gantt, an American industrial engineer born in 1861.🏙 He believed in the importance of organization and direction in engineering, and his famous quote reflects his thinking, "Engineering is the art of organizing and directing men and controlling the forces and materials of nature for the benefit of society."😎

Engineering is a field that involves the application of scientific, mathematical and technological principles to solve complex problems and improve the quality of life of society. For any TxDOT roads, we have three (3) permits as below😎

As an engineer working with TxDOT roads, it's important to understand the permitting process. TxDOT requires three permits for any project that involves their roads.🏗

✅A driveway permit is required if we need access to a TxDOT road. As part of this process, we need to submit a Traffic Study checklist. If our project is expected to affect the traffic flow rate, we'll need to complete a Traffic Impact Analysis (TIA) after submitting the checklist. This is to ensure that our project won't cause any undue disruptions to the flow of traffic on the road.

✅If we're planning to drain directly into a TxDOT ditch, we'll need to obtain a drainage permit. The permit is critical to ensure that our drainage system won't cause any damage to the TxDOT's infrastructure.

✅If we're connecting to any utility existing in the TxDOT right-of-way or crossing a TxDOT road, we'll need to obtain a Utility Installation Review (UIR) permit. This permit is necessary to ensure that our utility connections won't cause any disruptions or damage to TxDOT's facilities.

Understanding and obtaining the necessary permits for any TxDOT road projects is critical to ensuring a smooth permitting process and a successful project. It's important to carefully review the requirements for each permit and submit a complete application to avoid any delays or issues down the road.🥰

"Civil engineering is the largest and most important profession in the world. It is the profession that builds civilization." - Nora Stanton Blatch Barney.🏬

An important and up-to-date civil engineer in history is Nora Stanton Blatch Barney. She was the first woman to graduate in civil engineering from Cornell University in 1905 and became a leading figure in bridge and dam construction in the United States.

✅After graduating from Cornell, Barney worked as an engineer for the New York City Water Department. During her career, she specialized in dam construction and worked on several major projects, including the Ashokan Dam in the Catskill Mountains of New York.
