When a person starts class in Savasana with no option for Constructive Rest, I’m already wondering if this person knows how to meet all the bodies in the room where they are.
Part of the problem is that many classes are focused on hip opening postures because so many people guiding those classes come from backgrounds in which that feels good in THEIR bodies. It is a massive problem in Yogalandia having a whole bunch of people with similar backgrounds in dance and gymnastics that create hyper flexibility and an unrealistic expectation for others.
There are so many people that come to class or desire starting a yoga practice that don’t have that type of foundation, and/or their bodies have changed through aging to no longer support that type of movement. Furthermore, it’s just really great sequencing to stop only focusing on one part of the body because it feels good to you.
Who is it for????
Great practices are taught knowing what’s good for one isn’t good for everyone. They’re going look at poses through a functional lens that works for all bodies so that the deeper, transcendent work can actually happen.
👉🏾That means teachers are gonna have to do a little more research than just going through a 200 hour teaching program and feeling it in their bodies. 👀
Giving people an open option like “rest in a way in which rest is possible” is going to be a better bet for people to actually find some rest.
Oh, and using a strap under the knees in constructive rest is a game changer so that you no longer have to worry about holding the legs in alignment.
