🛢️ NEW DISCOVERY IN THE NORTH SEA — AND IT’S ALL ABOUT SMART ENGINEERING
Equinor and its partners Petoro and TotalEnergies have struck oil and gas in exploration well 30/8-7 S — the Grimsnes discovery, just 15 km southwest of the Oseberg Sør platform, 145 km west of Bergen, Norway.
The numbers:
▫️ 19–50 million barrels of recoverable oil equivalent
▫️ Drilled by the Deepsea Bergen rig, licence PL 190
▫️ Investment decision as early as next summer
▫️ First production within ~3 years
But the real story is HOW they plan to develop it:
No new platform. Grimsnes will be tied back to existing subsea facilities and produced through Oseberg Sør — 2–3 wells in a standard four-slot template, with standardised equipment ordered before sanction.
This is near-field exploration at its best: use infrastructure that is already paid for, cut costs, cut time from discovery to production, and keep mature fields producing longer.
It is part of Equinor’s bigger playbook — 200 near-field wells and 75 subsea developments by 2035. Norway already covers 20% of Europe’s oil and 30% of its gas.
