Some do not know Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States, observed on the last Monday in May, dedicated to honoring and mourning U.S. military personnel who died in service. . Started after the Civil War (first national observance in 1868) to decorate graves of fallen soldiers with flowers and flags... Originally known as Decoration Day: It is a time for national remembrance, often marked by visiting cemeteries, flying flags at half-staff, and a national moment of silence at 3 p.m. local time.... Unofficial Start of Summer: It is often marked by parades, family gatherings, barbecues, and the beginning of the summer season...... Difference from Veterans Day: Memorial Day honors those who died in military service, while Veterans Day (November 11th) honors all who have served in the military.
