Waterfowl hunting is more than just the hunt—it’s about the early mornings, learning patience, respecting wildlife, and creating memories with friends and love ones that last a lifetime. To help preserve those moments, I’m offering to gift one (1) professionally mounted duck to a youth hunter aged 15 years old or younger.

To be considered, participants must write a short hand written letter explaining why they would like to have their duck mounted. The letter doesn’t need to be fancy—just honest. Tell me about the hunt, who you were with, what made the moment special, and what duck hunting means to you. Details outlined below.

The Ross's goose (Anser rossii) is a white goose with black wingtips. Other differences from the snow goose are that the bill is smaller in proportion to its body.

It is the smallest of the three white geese that breed in North America. It is similar in appearance to a white-phase snow goose that we see a lot in Texas, but about 40% smaller.

2025-26 birds are just about finished!

Ready for 2026-27 season!!! Will begin taking birds starting 12/1/26. If you got birds that were harvest late season last year that you are looking to get mounted, now is the time!!!! Turnaround is 2-3 months!

Have been asked a few times what is the best way to select and care for your bird until you get it to your taxidermist.

With season starting soon thought this might be a good time to provide some insight. Everybody has their recommendations, these are mine…

Proper field care is the first step toward creating a beautiful, long-lasting bird mount. The quality of your finished mount depends greatly on how your bird is handled from harvest to the taxidermist!

What makes the best bird for mounting?
* Late season birds provide the best plumage / color / minimal pin feather (Dec - Feb)
* Minimal feather damage - shot / missing feathers
* Minimal head shot damage
* No broken wings bones
* Don’t worry about leg or bill damage - cast feet and heads are used as replacements
* Taxidermist can do amazing work but sometimes damage does impact the final product and will determine final mount position.

Immediately After Harvest
* Handle your bird carefully
* Carry by the feet or bill when possible.
* Avoid carrying it by the neck or wings.
* Protect the entire bird
* Isolate selected bird(s) from others.
* Keep bird cold - limit exposure to any heat
* Do not wash or soak the bird after harvesting.
* Keep the bird as clean and dry after harvesting

Protect the feathers
* Do not tape, tie, or compress feathers tightly.
* Avoid placing birds in crowded game bags
* DO NOT place in nylon stockings

Preparing Your Bird for Freezing
1. Before freezing:
* Wrap clean damp paper towel around head / feet.
* Position the wings naturally against the body.
* Keep the all feathers aligned.
* Place head under a wing or lay flat on back of bird
* Place the bird in a clean freezer bag.
* Remove as much excess air possible.
* Label / date / Seal tightly to prevent freezer burn.

Freezing and Storage
1. For the best results:
* Freeze your bird in freezer bags
* Store at 0°F or colder.
* Keep the bird frozen until delivery.

2. When transporting to your taxidermist
* Keep it frozen until it arrives at your taxidermist unless otherwise instructed

Please DO NOT
✗ Leave your bird in a warm vehicle
✗ Remove breast
✗ Use printed newspaper / nylon stockings
✗ Clean feather / remove blood
✗ NO FINISHERS

If you have questions on whether your bird(s) are a quality mountable bird. Take pictures/video in the field of your bird and text them to me for a quick review / questions.

Photos of the bird at time of harvest are always appreciated. It provides a better reference of any unique bill or leg features, colors or patterns so that your mounted bird is not just “a bird” it is “your bird”.

This dabbling duck is commonly know as Northern Pintail, but is also know by its scientific name, Anas acuta as well as Bull Sprig, Tuxedo or Brown Head by hunters! Call it what you want, but in my book I am going to call these two STUDS!!!
