In just 2 days, we completed a front lawn renovation that improved both drainage and curb appeal:

• Installed 340 feet of drainage
• Tied in 8 downspouts and installed catch basins where needed

This house has been unable to get grass to grow for many years, and the homeowners needed it done right. Well, Sod, Trees, and Sprinklers are our specialty!

Here's what our crew did:

🌳 Tree Trimming: Lifted the canopy to allow sunlight to reach the lawn and removed large branches hanging over the neighbors house.
🪵 Root Grinding: Ground down those hazardous and unsightly surface roots that prevent any grass from growing.
🌱 Topsoil Installation: Brought in rich topsoil to level the ground and create a perfect foundation.
🟩 Sod Installation: Laid down specialty shade resistant grass so when the trees grow back in the grass will survive. This grass only needs 2-4 hours of sunlight daily!

Because it is mid-February, sod is still dormant. We might not get that vibrant, glowing green picture quite yet, but look at how clean and structured this yard is now! Want to know something we’re not very good at?

Not looking for practical, cost-saving solutions. Any experienced irrigator knows that when making repairs on improperly installed systems, sometimes we need to find creative solutions in order to provide value to the customer while still achieving the desired result. This job also highlights why it's important to use licensed Irrigators who install systems properly to ensure they last and you don't end up with costly repairs down the line.

This irrigation system was originally installed without an in-ground shut-off valve and not to code. There was no way to winterize the backflow or protect the exposed pipes. This put the homeowner at a high risk should the backflow or pipes freeze.

Installing a shut-off valve the traditional way would have required cutting and reworking multiple pipes and wires, significantly increasing the cost. Instead, we had to get creative—installing an in-ground shut-off and adding unions that allow the backflow to be easily removed for winterization. It’s not a textbook install, but it achieves the desired protection while saving the homeowner money.

In Houston cold snaps, in-ground irrigation valve boxes are typically 5–15°F warmer than outside air due to soil insulation and reduced wind exposure, while above-ground valves freeze faster. This is significant when our freezes generally hover around 28-32 degrees during hard freezes. With the shut-off protected underground and the backflow removable, the risk of freeze damage is dramatically reduced, close to none.

Curious why we don't blow out lines? Freeze events in Houston are typically short in duration, and underground irrigation piping rarely drops below freezing. In most cases, properly installed shut-offs and winterization at the backflow provide sufficient protection, making line blowouts an unnecessary added expense for homeowners.
