Just shy of his 69th birthday, the author Tim Parks decided to pick up the mandolin again. At first, it felt like a daunting task. Even though he played for hours a day, his fingers felt stiff and he lacked technique. Seeking camaraderie in this endeavor, Parks wondered if he was singular in his new hobby. He found out he wasn’t. “If this attempt to reclaim the instrument of my youth had been a mistake, I wasn’t alone in making it. Asking around, I became aware of other older people who were returning to music or even taking it up for the first time,” Parks writes.
