270 vs the 300 win mag for hunting. One man’s reply: Using Nosler Trophy Grade ammunition as a standard, at 400 yards the .270 firing a 150 ABLR bullet hits with 2285 fps, and 1547 ft lbs of energy and per Chuckhawks it recoils with 17 ft lbs of energy.
The .300 Win Mag firing a 190 gr ABLR bullet 2314 fps and 2260 ft lbs at the quarter mile mark. The launch generated about 25 ft lbs of energy at the shoulder.
So, the .300 is going to make a lot more power throughout the flight of the bullet. No way around that. Its also going to generate almost 50% more recoil. Now there is only one level of dead. If your primary game is going to be whitetail with the occasional black bear in the mix, the .270 is your choice.
If you want to drop whitetail at 900 yards and plan on regularly hunting brown bear, go with the .300. The 300 WM is an extremely capable caliber, but it really starts to shine at the long range or heavy game arenas. In order to capitalize on that long range capability, you need to shoot a lot. That is going to cost money and shoulder.
I would say for what you want, the .270 is going to be a better choice.
