AMAZON ECHO / HOME AUTOMATION
Amazon Echo Plus (Alexa):
Echo devices come in different "flavor's". The classic Echo is a "hands free" speaker that allows to connect to a variety of useful services like listening to music, making a call, leave or receive messages, order food or goods from Amazon, check the weather, movie showings, the commute, the latest news, stock prices,.. It also got a built in hub for compatible smart home devices. Turn Lights, Fans, Switches on/off by voice command or Schedule. This allows to lock the house at a certain time for example or to open/close your garage door, turn the AC on when it gets too humid, Adjust the room temperature, close shutters and much more. (9.2" x 3.3" x 3.3", 33.6 oz)
As for flavor's, there is the small echo dot, a great choice if it has to blend in because of small size. The small speaker is not great for music but it can be paired to Blue Tooth speakers or connected by cable (3.5mm headphone plug) to speakers or a sound system/ Amplifier. (1.3" x 3.3" x 3.3", 5.7 oz.)
The Echo, is almost equivalent to Echo Plus, without the "home automation hub" and a tweeter that's 0.2" smaller than the on in the Plus. (5.8" x 3.4" x 3.4", 29.0 oz.)
Echo Spot is small but comes with a 2.5" display.
It's like a radio clock, allowing to display pictures and video but also able to make video calls. Just like the Dot, it got Blue Tooth and the 3.5mm connector if better sound is desired. (4.1" x 3.8" x 3.6", 14.8 oz.)
Echo Show, got a vivid 7" screen and Dual 2" Speakers.
It takes video calls to the next level but is also big enough for watching videos or movies through Amazon's Video service. Just like the Spot, it can show the time, weather and or calendar events while not actively in use (like a screen saver). (7.4" x 7.4" x 3.5", 41.0 oz.)
Amazon's "FireTV Cube" is not part of the Echo family but got "Alexa" integrated, allowing it to perform all Echo features. It is a hands free media player supporting 4k Ultra HD. Using the HDMI port of a TV it's able to turn it on /off and adjust the volume by voice command. Integrated infra-red sensors allow it to work with a variety of different devices such as cable-boxes, satellite receivers, video/DVD/Blue-Ray players or amplifiers and home cinema systems. A built in speaker allows it to answer questions or play music even when the TV is not on (Echo like). Like all Fire-TV products it can access Amazon Video, Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Showtime, Sony Vue, Sling, Youtube, DirectV Now and more.
Not directly related to Amazon Echo services but a nice addition are Echo ready Cams like Amazon's Cloud Cam.
For example it could be placed in the baby's room and by asking "Alexa, show me the baby's room, the cube would show the live video of the cam on the TV screen. This feature also works on the "Spot" and the "Show". Features like notification by movement and recording are also available (some features like cloud recording may need a subscription)
