Leading and supporting campus sustainability initiatives at Rice University

The Office of Sustainability leads and provides support for a broad range of campus sustainability initiatives spanning the entire university enterprise. A sampling of this work includes planning for sustainability, green building, energy and water conservation, climate action, composting, recycling, environmental education, public lectures and events, student environmental projects, research partnerships, fundraising, and classroom engagement. The Office’s initiatives and actions are guided by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, providing a holistic view of sustainability aligned with solving some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

We're falling into sustainable habits! 🍂 Thanks to students, dining staff, and campus partners, Rice composted 62,853 lbs of food waste in September. That's a lot of scraps turned into something useful instead of heading to the landfill. ♻️💚

Over the past few weeks, our team has been connecting with sustainability professionals, sharing lessons learned from Rice's campus initiatives, and exploring new ideas to bring back to our work. Here's a look at where we've been! 👇

🌿 Waco Green Communities
We connected with sustainability leaders and practitioners working to build greener, more resilient communities across Texas. Thank you to Keep Waco Beautiful for bringing everyone together!

🏫 Association of Texas College & University Facilities Professionals (TCUF)
Our team shared 25 years of lessons learned from Rice's campus as a living lab, highlighting how university operations can support sustainability innovation, research, and applied learning. Thanks to TCUF for the opportunity to share our work!

♻️ Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE)
We joined colleagues from Columbia, Duke, and USC to explore how universities assess the success and impact of their campus living lab programs, from student learning and operational outcomes to community partnerships. Shoutout to AASHE, Duke, Columbia, and the University of Southern California for the collaboration!

We're grateful for the opportunity to learn from and share ideas with institutions and organizations working toward a more sustainable future. 💚

EcoRep Summer Spotlight!

This summer, EcoRep Sammi took her learning beyond Rice, traveling to Kenya to conduct research focused on maternal health. Through hands-on research and collaboration, she explored how innovative approaches to global health can help improve health outcomes for mothers and communities.

A special shout-out to Rice360 Institute for Global Health Technologies for helping make experiences like this possible! 💙
