The Doug Thorpe Group

The Doug Thorpe Group Executive coaching for C-suite executives, high potential management candidates, business owners. Individual or peer group opportunities.

With over 20 years of experience owning, running, and building businesses from scratch, I’ve always had my finger on the pulse of things: people, teams, and operations. People, processes, and profitability are the core of any business. If you, as a business owner are struggling in any of these areas, I can help. If you even need a little help with management and leadership style and methods, we ca

n do that too. In my early career, I was a banker, helping companies of all shapes and sizes. I developed a wide range of experience with businesses in all stages of their growth. Working with owners I went beyond a simple loan request. I worked closely with the owner to maximize their potential as a for-profit company. After leaving banking, I became a serial entrepreneur, creating and running five different companies. Over the last decade, I’ve been laser-focused on creating results for businesses like yours. I’m obsessed with business results and ROI. And I don’t like to waste time! I’m not a textbook coach or consultant with a bunch of theories. I rely on years of hands-on experience to help you grow your business. I deliver my advisory and coaching services primarily to:

👉SMALL AMD MID-CAP COMPANIES: I work directly with the owners to deep-dive into the elements of people, process, and profitability. We map out specific actions to better engage your teams, streamline process, and increase profitability.

👉INDIVIDUAL MANAGERS: If you were promoted to management but never had any training to equip you to lead, I can help you in many ways to define your leadership style, increase your personal influence, and maximize your value to the company.

👉CORPORATE CLIENTS: I’ve worked with Fortune 500 companies, coaching executives one on one, helping them improve their effectiveness, manage change, and improve profitability.

🎯 New Episode Alert: The Six Pillars of Effective Leadership

What makes a great leader? Is it something you're born with, or can it be developed?

In this powerful episode of Leadership Powered by Common Sense, I sit down with Jim Carlough, author of "The Six Pillars of Effective Leadership: A Roadmap to Success," to explore the essential framework every leader needs.

Jim shares his six pillars: ✅ Integrity ✅ Compassion & Empathy ✅ Focus ✅ Stability ✅ Humor ✅ Plus the critical role of mentorship

What really struck me was Jim's story about integrity—a lesson he learned at age 23 that he's applied every single night since 1983. The question his city manager asked him changed everything: "Did I do anything today for my own personal benefit that was at the expense of another individual, group, or organization?"

My favorite takeaway? "Leadership begins when your feet hit the floor in the morning—not when you sit behind your desk."

Jim also shares incredible real-world stories, including: • How he kept a team of 25 people engaged during a 3-year technology transition (and they became the happiest employees in a 20,000-person company!) • Why Jeff Bezos moved his desk into the customer service department for 6 months • A seventh-grade lesson in compassion that demonstrates the art of leadership

Special Offer: Jim is giving away signed copies of his book to the first 3-5 people who comment on this episode's social media posts with their feedback!

Whether you're a new manager struggling with the "soft skills" no one taught you, or a seasoned leader looking to refine your approach, this conversation is packed with wisdom.

💡 THE $2.5M LEADERSHIP BLIND SPOT

Yesterday, a Fortune 500 VP showed me their Q3 numbers. Revenue up 18%. Profit margins down 12%.

The culprit? Leadership inefficiency at scale.

Here's what I saw in 90 minutes that cost them millions:

→ 47 weekly meetings with overlapping decision-makers
→ 6-layer approval chains for $10K decisions
→ 23% of senior staff time spent "managing up" instead of delivering
→ Key initiatives stalled for 8 weeks waiting for "alignment"

This isn't a people problem. It's a leadership systems problem.

While their competition is building lean decision architectures, they're running leadership like it's still 1995.

The math is simple:

200 senior leaders × 10 wasted hours/week = 2,000 hours

2,000 hours × $150/hour average cost = $300K weekly

$300K × 52 weeks = $15.6M annually in leadership inefficiency

The companies winning right now? They've redesigned how leadership actually functions in a distributed, fast-moving world.

Not better meetings. Better leadership operating systems.

Real question: If you could eliminate just 25% of the friction in your leadership processes, what would that be worth to your bottom line?

The companies figuring this out first are creating sustainable competitive moats.

🎯 EXECUTIVE INSIGHT: Why Your Competition is Already Investing in This

After leading teams across military operations, Wall Street trading floors, and scaling 5 companies, I've noticed something that separates the winners from everyone else...

It's not better strategy. It's not more capital. It's not even better people.

It's leadership architecture that adapts faster than market conditions.

While most executives are still using 20th-century leadership playbooks, the smart ones are rebuilding their leadership operating systems for what's actually happening NOW:

→ Distributed teams that need inspiration, not supervision
→ Multi-generational workforces with completely different motivators
→ Decision cycles that have compressed from months to days
→ Talent wars where culture is the only sustainable differentiator

The brutal truth? Your technical skills got you promoted. Your leadership skills will determine if you survive the next disruption.

I've spent 30+ years figuring out what works across completely different high-stakes environments. The patterns are clear.

Question for the executives in my network: What's the biggest leadership gap you're seeing between what worked 5 years ago versus what's required today?

If you're a small or medium business owner struggling with employee performance reviews, you're not alone. Our Story

I help business owners, senior managers and executives discover new heights in their own ability to make a difference. I can show you the tools, measurable action steps, and successful ways to improve performance.

Throughout my career, I have been a student of effective and inspiring leadership.

First, as Commissioned Army Officer, then as a senior officer of a large and very well-managed regional bank, I gained frontline leadership experience coupled with hands-on ex*****on. Later, I left for the private sector where I served in executive roles for three different entrepreneurial start-ups and founded two regional non-profits.
