Our band of brothers. Their unbreakable bond forged in fire, stained by the blood, sweat and tears of combat. Each moment seared into memory, only to be revived in the company of those twelve. A remarkable example of how twelve strangers, with such diverse backgrounds, can unify as one to overcome some of the most challenging adversities this world has to offer. A true testament to their unshakeable commitment to one another.
Twelve strangers from around the world with the same calling; honor, duty, service to country. No one could have imagined how intertwined their lives would become. Although their time in uniform has come to an end, their service to this great nation will never expire. Each year this group will come together during a time of remembrance to honor those who came before them, and those who were lost. Not unlike some sort of ritual, these men will toast with whiskey and share their memories as the embers pierce the night sky. In this moment, they are all together again.
At the end of a long weekend these men will prepare to part ways once again. They’ll reminisce about the new memories they created and look for open space to store them alongside those memories etched in eternity. They’ll share a hug and maybe a tear or two. “Until next time”, they’ll say as they turn and walk off into the distance. These men will return to their homes and share tales from the weekend with their friends and family, almost as an attempt to bring their teammates home to meet everyone.
The twelve will fall back into their routines, and normal life will commence once again. Although they are no longer in the same place with their teammates, they will always be together. The bonds they formed through the experiences they shared will forever keep them connected. Their love and respect for one another will fuel their drive as they journey towards new heights. Some days will be filled with happiness and laughter, while others will be plagued with hopelessness and despair. But they remain steadfast. These twelve will forever be ready to respond when their brothers need a hand, because although their time in uniform has come to an end, their service to one another is everlasting. Until we meet again.
