The six senses can serve as a guide for establishing an effective classroom environment. It can also be used to drive your instruction.

In ancient mythology, Heru or Horus, is believed to have been the son and resurrection of Ausar (Osiris); however, Heru represents our pure will and intentions. These are expressed by overcoming our emotions through the senses in order to bring more clarity.

Consider how to utilize your knowledge and understanding of the six senses in your classroom:

Sight. 👁️ Your classroom environment should be visually appealing and a reflection of your personality, tone and mood.

Sound. 🔊 Your classroom environment should have a sense of volume control.

Smell. 👃🏾Your classroom environment should be therapeutic

Taste. 👅 Make sure to be very selective of the food you provide for your students. It will affect their behavior and mood.

Touch. ☝🏾 Your classroom environment should be interactive; full of experimentation and exploration.

Thought. 🧠 Your classroom environment should provoke thought and higher intelligence.

The 7 Universal Laws, which govern this entire universe, have been written about and taught for over 5,000 years in many spiritual teachings — from those in Ancient KMT (Egypt) to Ancient Greece.

Consider these laws as a source of insight and clarity while you embark on this journey as an educator.

⭐ Mentalism
The dynamics of the classroom will begin with the teacher’s mentality and how he/she responds to others. Your words and actions stem from your thoughts. Be mindful of how you think about yourself and others.

⭐ Correspondence
Your classroom should be a microcosm of the society you envision. Every interaction with a student should be governed by a compass of hope and compassion, knowing these small moments can potentially have a greater impact.

⭐ Vibration
Vibration is the feeling students experience in the classroom. This feeling, or "vibe" is based on your energy. As educators, we must be conscious of our energy, as your students will instinctively match your vibes.

⭐ Rhythm
Transitions, routines, and your overall instruction should maintain a certain pulse, or rhythm. Understanding that everything ebbs and flows is vital to responding to the students' needs in real time.

⭐ Cause and Effect
As educators, we have the sole responsibility for setting the tone in our respective classrooms. Every action we take, big or small, will have an effect on a child. This reality can be both intimidating and liberating. The most important act is to show grace and solace in understanding each moment is an opportunity to make a significant change.

⭐ Polarity
Everything has an opposite, i.e. up and down, left and right, hot and cold, etc. With this understanding, it is vital for an educator to anticipate, encourage, and engage in opposing views. When introducing content, always feel free to provide alternative perspectives. This makes the dynamics of the classroom more well-rounded.

⭐ Gender
While the ideals of gender are ever-evolving, consider it as a unification of various forces that are both interconnected and necessary to achieve growth and development. How we identify ourselves is crucial as we continue to cultivate and maintain positive relationships with others.

The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz, is based on teachings of the Ancient Toltecs, which serves as a source of joy and the end of suffering through light and love. Consider how to apply this code of conduct as an educator:

⭐ Be Impeccable With Your Words

How can we be impeccable with our words? Your words can either build or destroy. Be conscious, not only with self-talk, but also with the words you project to others. You can literally create your own reality with the words you choose to use on a daily basis. Suggestion: Try to start your daily routines with mindfulness, meditation, and/or positive affirmations. The way we speak to our students will highly affect our relationships with them.

⭐ Never Make Assumptions

Try not to make assumptions. Oftentimes, we tend to assume the worst outcome. Also, be encouraged to allow students to express their points of views. You may be surprised on how articulate they can be when you allow them to advocate for themselves. Just like any other relationship, it is important to establish open communication between all parties. This means administration, coworkers, parents and students. We all deserve to have a safe space where we feel comfortable lending our voices.

⭐ Don't Take Things Personally

Try not to take things too personally. Sometimes, the energy others project may not be a true reflection of who or what you are. While you may not be able to control the thoughts, words and actions of others, you do have complete control of how you respond.

⭐ Always Do Your Best

At the end of the day, pat yourself on the back. You did your best. Sometimes, however, your best may not be good enough in the eyes of others. What matters is how you feel about yourself on a day-to-day basis. Try to always put your best foot forward and trust the process.

As you leave your classroom for the day, always ask yourself these four questions:

1. Did I use my words to build or destroy?
2. Did I make misdirected assumptions about myself or others?
3. Did I allow personal opinions and biases to get in the way of building authentic relationships with students, parents and staff members?
4. Did I do my best and if not, what can I do to improve my outcomes?
