Engraving some clear acrylic as part of a routing job today. Notice how the engraving glows when we shine a light from the edge of the sheet. As the light passes through the clear acrylic, it contacts the frosted engraved areas, causing the light to scatter and diffract. The result is an appearance of glowing letters. Physics and plastics for the win! Very cool.

Today is a special day. On October 1st of 2014, 10 years ago today, PlasTex Precision Manufacturing opened its doors. What a ride it has been. There have been plenty of ups, and plenty of downs (including two floods), and lots of hard work. We have so much gratitude for the friends, associates, vendors, employees, and customers that have helped us succeed along the way. God is good and we, without a doubt, have felt His helping hand throughout the last 10 years. We are truly thankful. Now, let's go do 10 more (minus the floods)!!!!

Having fun machining some 3/4" thick natural nylon today on the router. Nylon is an incredibly strong material with high compressive strength, stiffness, and great abrasion resistance. Fillers such as glass and a variety of lubricants can be added to the material to enhance strength and aid in friction reduction. PlasTex Precision is excited to add a new CNC router to our machine lineup. Our SmartShop II CNC router features automatic tool change, a 48” x 96” vacuum table, and surfacing capabilities. It's hot outside but it looks like winter in this mill today! We are finishing up some custom pipe protection caps made from Delrin. This material is DuPont's homopolymer acetal and is a great all-around plastic due to its strength, dimensional stability, and low coefficient of friction which produces less wear. As you can see, it machines nicely and comes off in "chips" as opposed to "strings" which requires more management. We love machining plastics here at PlasTex Precision Manufacturing!! Putting the final touches on these natural Nylon components by adding a 1/2-14 NPT thread to the back of the part. Nylon is a great material for tough applications that require compressive strength, stiffness, abrasion resistance, and slightly elevated temperatures. This incredibly strong material has a compressive strength value of over 12,000 PSI!!! Additives and fillers such as glass or lubricants can be added to increase strength, reduce friction, and improve heat resistance. Common applications are wear pads, sheaves, equipment stand liners, downhole nose cones, gears, and bushings. Natural Nylon is also FDA approved for food related applications. Day in and day out, we are drilling and boring to create an inside diameter in plastic rods. Since most plastics are opaque, we don't often get to see what is happening on the inside of the rod. Well today, we had the opportunity to drill and bore clear cast acrylic rod and got an awesome look at what takes place internally during this process. As the tools cut the acrylic, the material turns cloudy creating a pretty neat sight to see. Too cool! Machining plastics is our passion here at PlasTex Precision Manufacturing.
