What happens after the rescue can mean as much as the rescue itself.

For Jared, that realization came six months after helping save a woman struck by a speedboat. She told Jared and his team that, because of their response, she had been able to attend her son’s wedding.

Meet Jared — a 13-year career firefighter and EMT near Indianapolis with experience in rope rescue, hazmat, swift water and dive rescue.

Now he’s bringing those experiences — and his love of adventure — to the F2F conversation.

Air status should not be visible from only one direction.

AirBoss uses 360-degree buddy lights to make the firefighter’s status recognizable from the front, back and across the fireground. The color of the lights provides an immediate visual indication of how much air remains.

That visibility is not only for the person wearing the SCBA. It helps the crew maintain awareness of one another in a dynamic environment.

The shift ends. The awareness doesn’t.

Firefighters spend hours listening for alarms, spotting hazards and preparing for what could go wrong. Then they go home and are somehow expected to switch it all off.

But the exits still get noticed. The smoke alarms get checked. The dangerous driver gets watched a little more closely. After being ready for so long, even being still can feel uncomfortable.

Tennessee firefighter Austin asked whether firefighters ever truly learn to turn it off — or just get better at managing it?

The voices and experiences belong to real firefighters. Dräger simply provides the platform.

Clear vision is about more than the size of the lens. It is also about what happens to the image when the firefighter turns, looks up or scans from side to side.

The facepiece used with AirBoss has a lens curved in two directions. This helps prevent the distortion and “fishbowl effect” that can cause dizziness or disorientation.

Firefighters already work in conditions where visibility is compromised. Their facepiece should not create another obstacle.

Completing an intensive public safety diving course was one of the proudest moments of this Indiana firefighter’s career. But no single accomplishment proves you belong forever.

After seven months away from the firehouse because of an injury, an Indiana firefighter finds himself confronting a deeply personal question:

“Who am I if the uniform goes away?”

He has chosen the uniform twice—first in the U.S. Army and then in the fire service. Both choices came from a desire to serve and belong to something larger. But they also led to a difficult realization:

Feedback only matters if it changes the product.

Firefighters tested AirBoss and told us what worked, what they liked and what needed to be improved. Their input helped shape a system that carries its weight lower, closer to the firefighter’s center of gravity, with a floating back frame and dual-axis waist belt that move with the body.

The goal was never to make the firefighter adapt to the SCBA. It was to make the SCBA feel like an extension of the firefighter — not a restriction on what they can do.

Training should feel real before the call is real.

Firefighters at the Delaware State Fire School will soon have a powerful new place to prepare. Its new Dräger live-fire training building — the largest Dräger training prop on the East Coast — features five burn chambers and multiple environments designed to recreate the heat, smoke and changing conditions of a structure fire.

The facility will support training for forcible entry, search and rescue, hose operations, firefighter self-survival, vehicle fires and more. Most importantly, it will give instructors new ways to build the skill, confidence and decision-making firefighters need before those lessons are tested on the fireground.
