Regular trims are a great way to monitor your horse (or donkeys) health! Hoof growth is like a medical record for nutrition, health, and environmental conditions. 🌈

Here's an informative article on the Club Foot in horses. It references Dr. James Rooney's work, and an interpretation by a well respected AQHA Judge, Don Topliff. Give it a read, even if your horse isn't afflicted with stilt-like angles. Symmetry in horses legs and hooves can be understood and appreciated by all equestrians.

Equine club foot results when the tendons along the back of a horse’s limb shorten. This condition has a number of causes and effects.

We as farriers try not to give false hope, and I particularly like to be straight with owners about potential outcomes of therapeutic shoeing. That little gelding I posted about yesterday wasn't keen on leaving his stall because walking anywhere wasn't enjoyable. In fact, when he and I first met, he would swing his left leg out and most his stride was before his shoulder. I received a video of him today (24 hours after our visit yesterday) of him being hand-walked in a soft arena. He was trotting, willingly, on his own accord. In 24 hours this horse would painful take a few steps into the alley to a happy jog with a much longer stride. This makes all those hard long days worth while.

Horse Clogs. No, not the Dutch kind but still wooden. This sweet gelding is pretty sore in his front and these clogs will assist his breakover while the padded interior will alleviate pressure at the point of the coffin bone. His owners are going to monitor his progress and we have high hopes his movement will improve with these wooden additions. Keeping horses comfortable is a large part of this job, and it's cases like these that really exercise a farriers skills. Don't worry! The shrink wrap was just on while the casting was drying.
