It’s always a singular honor as a historic tradesman to be able to teach my trade to others in a setting such as Eastfield Village.

For those who are unfamiliar with the historic workshop series at Eastfield, check out https://www.historiceastfield.org/workshops for more information.

Back from foreign adventures and back on to the shoebench. First up, a pair of common shoes exhibiting workmanship typical to a coarse shoe from the very end of the 1770’s.

A good deal of the silence on this page over the last six months or so is due to the fact that my mental energy has been almost completely focused on an international project in Sweden which culminated with a month long trip in April to document and draw the footwear from the 1628 Vasa shipwreck, as part of a two man team invited by the Vasa museum.

One of the tangential aspects of this project was the reproduction of two pair of shoes based directly on archaeological examples from the wreck. These reproductions will be used by the museum to show visitors what clothing and footwear from the wreck would have looked like when new, and will help the museum staff to understand how these items would have worn out and aged.

While this page has been quiet for a bit, life itself has been anything but. Production keeps moving as best as possible with materials shortages causing constant delays and headaches. With the addition of an international calceology project (which will have me out of the country for the month of April) and a number of large institutional projects over the course of 2022, I’ve made the difficult decision to not take on any additional non-institutional work for at least the rest of the year in the hopes of catching up a bit and focusing on the work already in front of me. My deepest apologies to those who are waiting for work and those who had hoped to place an order at some point this year.

It’s not often I find myself sitting in front of a sewing machine, but when I need one for testing out a difficult pattern (or four) on a new last, I’m quite glad to have access to an engineering marvel such as this 1912 dated Singer 18-27. It’s incredibly rewarding getting to sit in front of a machine that is one hundred and nine years old and have it function as though it just left the factory.

The wisdom that “big stitches make money but small stitches sell shoes” was imparted upon me early in my shoemaking education, though admittedly I don’t get to do exceedingly fine work too often these days. It’s been a fun test of muscle memory using a fine stitching awl to attach the soles on a pair of kidskin pumps this week.

Facebook tells me I haven’t been posting enough, so here’s a few pictures to illustrate why.

It’s been nothing but shoes for the last month, and seems as though it’ll be nothing but shoes for the next few weeks as well…
