Guanacaste Airport, a member of the VINCI Airports network, and the Costa Rican Tourism Institute announce the addition of the new United Airlines route from Washington-Dulles International Airport (IAD) starting December 17.
According to the United Airlines schedule, the new IAD – LIR route will operate daily during the peak year-end season aboard a Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft with a capacity of 179 seats, including 20 seats in business class.
“We are pleased to announce the arrival of the first direct flight between Guanacaste Airport and Washington, D.C. This flight will benefit residents of Washington, Virginia, and Maryland, and will leverage United's extensive connectivity network in the northeastern United States. Furthermore, it will strengthen air connectivity from our main source market for tourists during the peak season,” explained Marcos Borges, Executive President of the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT).
Borges added that the ICT continues to strengthen its strategy of attracting airlines to Guanacaste, benefiting nearby communities by boosting job creation and fostering multiple economic linkages.
With the addition of this new route, United Airlines continues to expand its presence at Guanacaste Airport and will now offer flights from its seven hubs in the United States. As the largest airline between the United States and Costa Rica, United currently offers direct flights from Guanacaste Airport to Newark/New York (EWR), Denver (DEN), Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO), Houston (IAH), and Chicago (ORD).
“United is proud to offer the only nonstop service between Washington-Dulles and Guanacaste, making it easier for travelers from the U.S. East Coast to enjoy Costa Rica’s world-class beaches and warm weather during the peak holiday season,” said Tom Kozlowski, United Airlines’ Senior Manager of Network Planning for Latin America. “This new seasonal flight complements our existing service between San José and Dulles, giving customers more travel options between Costa Rica and the Washington, D.C. area, as well as access to destinations across United’s extensive global network.”
“The opening of this direct route between Guanacaste and Washington, D.C., represents a milestone for the destination and reflects the collaborative work with our partners, as well as the airlines’ confidence in the growth potential. This new service reaffirms that Guanacaste Airport has the infrastructure, operational capacity, and conditions necessary to support the expansion of its operations and the development of new routes,” said Renata González, Guanacaste Airport’s Commercial and Communications Manager.
