Guanacaste Airport, a member of the VINCI Airports network, and the Costa Rican Tourism Institute announce the addition of the new United Airlines route from Washington-Dulles International Airport (IAD) starting December 17.

According to the United Airlines schedule, the new IAD – LIR route will operate daily during the peak year-end season aboard a Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft with a capacity of 179 seats, including 20 seats in business class.

“We are pleased to announce the arrival of the first direct flight between Guanacaste Airport and Washington, D.C. This flight will benefit residents of Washington, Virginia, and Maryland, and will leverage United's extensive connectivity network in the northeastern United States. Furthermore, it will strengthen air connectivity from our main source market for tourists during the peak season,” explained Marcos Borges, Executive President of the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT).

Borges added that the ICT continues to strengthen its strategy of attracting airlines to Guanacaste, benefiting nearby communities by boosting job creation and fostering multiple economic linkages.

With the addition of this new route, United Airlines continues to expand its presence at Guanacaste Airport and will now offer flights from its seven hubs in the United States. As the largest airline between the United States and Costa Rica, United currently offers direct flights from Guanacaste Airport to Newark/New York (EWR), Denver (DEN), Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO), Houston (IAH), and Chicago (ORD).

“United is proud to offer the only nonstop service between Washington-Dulles and Guanacaste, making it easier for travelers from the U.S. East Coast to enjoy Costa Rica’s world-class beaches and warm weather during the peak holiday season,” said Tom Kozlowski, United Airlines’ Senior Manager of Network Planning for Latin America. “This new seasonal flight complements our existing service between San José and Dulles, giving customers more travel options between Costa Rica and the Washington, D.C. area, as well as access to destinations across United’s extensive global network.”

“The opening of this direct route between Guanacaste and Washington, D.C., represents a milestone for the destination and reflects the collaborative work with our partners, as well as the airlines’ confidence in the growth potential. This new service reaffirms that Guanacaste Airport has the infrastructure, operational capacity, and conditions necessary to support the expansion of its operations and the development of new routes,” said Renata González, Guanacaste Airport’s Commercial and Communications Manager.

😍🧠 Crazy Facts About Guanacaste, Costa Rica 🇨🇷🔥

Guanacaste wasn’t always Costa Rican. Nope. Back in the day, it belonged to Nicaragua… then in 1824 it basically said, “Nah, we good over here,” and joined Costa Rica voluntarily. Imagine a whole province ghosting a country before texting existed. 🗳️😂

Its name comes from a tree shaped like an ear. An EAR. 👂🌳 Somebody looked at a seed pod and said, “Yeah… that’s definitely cartilage.”

And then you got Nicoya — one of the world’s “Blue Zones,” where people casually live past 100 years old. Meanwhile the rest of us eat microwave burritos at 2 a.m. wondering why our knees sound like popcorn. 👵✨

The Rincón de la Vieja volcano has over 9 craters and stays active. Costa Rica really said, “Let’s build paradise… but keep a giant lava gr***de nearby just for flavor.” 🌋🔥

The national tree? The Guanacaste tree. Massive shade tree. Basically the country’s official umbrella. ☂️🇨🇷

Then there’s Coyol wine — booze made from a palm tree. 🍷🌴 And locals swear if you drink it and step into the sun, it hits twice as hard. That’s not alcohol anymore. That’s a side quest. ☀️🥴

Liberia is called “The White City” because the streets and houses used to be white. Sounds elegant… until rainy season turned everybody into powdered donuts. ⚪😂

The food? Pure corn civilization. 🌽 Tortillas, rosquillas, tanelas, arroz de maíz… these people looked at corn and said, “We’re not done yet.”

And the Sabanero yell? 🤠📢 That loud cowboy scream at festivals? That’s the sound of a man who’s wrestled cattle, survived the heat, and still made it home for dinner.

You can also watch humpback whales show up to have babies off the coast. 🐋 Like even the whales are out here saying, “Yeah, Guanacaste feels safe.”

The beaches come in every color too — white sand, black volcanic sand… it’s like Mother Nature couldn’t decide on a filter. 🏖️🌈

UNESCO protects the region because it contains one of the rarest dry tropical forests on Earth. 🌍🍃 Basically Earth DLC content.

And Costa Rica beat William Walker’s filibusters there in 1856. ⚔️ Tiny country energy: “You picked the wrong ranch, buddy.”

Santa Cruz is the folklore capital — marimba music, dancing, culture everywhere. 💃🎶 Meanwhile modern music sounds like somebody arguing with Auto-Tune in a parking lot.

They’ve even got their own international airport in Liberia, so tourists can skip San José entirely and land straight in paradise. ✈️😎

And then there’s Ostional, where thousands of sea turtles arrive at the same time to lay eggs. 🐢🥚 Nature really said, “Release the babies!”

More than 200 days of sunshine a year too. ☀️ If you can’t get a tan in Guanacaste, you might actually be a vampire.

🇨🇷😂 Planning a trip to Costa Rica?

I made a PDF with Costa Rican slang, survival phrases, culture tips, and stuff tourists usually figure out AFTER embarrassing themselves in public. 😭

DM me the Costa Rican flag 🇨🇷 and I’ll send it right away.
