Who is on your personal and professional board of directors?

Inspired by an activity created by Jill Nicole Bluming I posed the question to my Advisory Alliance members during our virtual strategy session today.

Consider assembling the skills, expertise and experience you and your business most need right now.

Us solopreneurs especially need to build our advisors, whether through the kinds of circles I host or by creating mental meetings with the people you most admire.

Who are the people you want to learn from?

What questions would you love for others to help you answer?

I’ve had Eleanor Roosevelt on my board of directors in the past because I needed to be around her no nonsense energy and advice.

It’s the intention behind it. The conscious assembling.

It’s knowing you need it and taking the time to do it.

What would you do with an hour to focus?

When creating my new website, I added an 80 minute Business Strategy Session that you can book anytime you need it.

I’m hearing from more leaders and business owners that they just need to think and talk something through.

They need the SPACE to make a decision and create a plan.

It’s hard to carve out that kind of time on their own, but it feels easier when they book on my calendar.

When they commit to someone else to show up and really figure it out.

The luxury of an hour or more, can you imagine??

The relief of having taken it. Of knowing instead of wondering.

Expanding the scale of your work directly relates to the space you allow yourself to take up.

Let that sink in.

Because if you try to build bigger at work but stay small in relationships and family, it’s a jarring disconnect.

You’ll feel constricted and your work can suffer too.

You’re being inauthentic in at least one of those environments.

So when I witnessed the massive pieces by artist at Friday’s at I had to ask her:

How does working in bigger scales and taking up more physical gallery space affect how you take up space personally?

She shared how she’s needed to become more comfortable with it overtime.

From how she carried herself in front of the gathered audience, the larger scale is more authentic than ever for her.

Something for the rest of us to aim for as well.

Notice the space you’re comfortable taking up, even in conversations, and what’s possible in your work if you expand your personal space. And the reverse.

What helps you get a fresh perspective?

Lately I find myself asking clients and friends if the exact opposite (of whatever they say) can be true.

Is it possible that we don’t have to make money in the strict ways we’re told we need to, or that relationships can look and feel differently?

That whatever we think we have to do a certain way can work better for us instead.

I returned to this photo I took at the fun because it feels that way.

That we shouldn’t always believe our eyes.

Things can be different and we need instead to open our minds to other possibilities.

Something to consider going into this weekend.

The first step in being able to talk about money? Safety.

While not a financial expert, more of my conversations with business owners involve money because of the space we’ve created for honesty and openness.

Neither one of us need the answers in that conversation, as much as we need the willingness to say hard things.

Admit the challenge to stay afloat or to understand what it takes to succeed.

Once you can feel comfortable opening up, it feels more possible to do something about it.

Then you can build a budget or apply for a loan.

So if you’re having trouble even looking at your quickbooks, reading a P&L, or opening up your latest credit card statement, consider first finding someone you trust.

To sit with these things together.

To say hard or uncomfortable things.

And feel supported and heard.

No doubt you’ll be more able to take a step after that.
