The Breakwater Sauna represents Harbor’s most comprehensive outdoor experience, expanding the sauna into a connected sequence of purposeful spaces. Much like the interconnected forms of early New England buildings and working coastal structures, each component contributes to a cohesive, functional whole. Building upon the design language established by our flagship Lighthouse Sauna, the Breakwater carries forward Harbor’s continued exploration of maritime architectural practice, preserving the centuries old ritual of sauna within.
Using the sauna room as its starting point, the Breakwater extends the experience beyond its walls. A covered porch connects the main sauna to an enclosed changing alcove, opening further to an isolated outdoor shower which allows the surrounding landscape to feel even more closely tied to the experience. Each space serves a distinct purpose while remaining carefully connected, creating a natural progression that unfolds with intention.
Clad in our flagship Weathered Grey cedar, the Breakwater echoes the timeless exterior patina found present across coastal regions. Over time, the cedar will continue to weather naturally, protected by a hand mixed exterior linseed oil-based paint. A salvaged brass maritime light and additional antique brass fixtures provide a subtle statement piece on the porch exterior.
Within, the sauna features a HUUM | sauna heaters HIVE 11kW electric heating element, with heat retention achieved through ROCKWOOL insulation and a v***r barrier. Ventilation is achieved passively from both an intake by the heater and gapped flooring, with airflow exiting through a sliding vent under the top bench.
Like the enduring buildings that inspired its form, the Breakwater is designed to become a lasting experience within the landscape.
