Heads up, Lincoln County:

You may notice smoke in the Genoa area today. There is a controlled burn taking place at the Genoa landfill.

This is a planned and monitored burn, so there is no cause for concern.

We cannot express enough, that our fire conditions are beyond extreme right now. Today’s fire is a good example of that. It doesn’t take much right now for a fire to get large and and out of control. Please be careful with whatever activities you are doing outside. The county is under a Level 3 burn restriction you can check our website or the counties for any updates or clarification. Please help us and do your part to help us keep our community safe!

Last night the Hugo Fire Protection District was paged out to a semi-trailer fire on Highway 40/287. Upon arrival crews found the trailer was well involved. The trailer was loaded with paper products which made it extremely hard to put out with the large amount of products on fire inside the trailer. Extra water resources were requested from Limon Area Fire Protection District and North East Lincoln Fire Protection District (Arriba). CDOT also came with a loader to help open the trailer and spread out the products to help us put it out. Colorado State Patrol and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s office assisted by closing the road and helping to keep the scene safe for our first responders.
Thank you to everyone that helped us!

We’ve received several questions about the smoke visible in the air across Lincoln County today. The smoke is residual smoke drifting into the area from a fire near Lake McConaughy.

At this time, there are no active fires in Lincoln County associated with the smoke being seen today. Changing wind patterns are simply carrying smoke from that incident into our area.

We will continue to monitor conditions. If you see smoke that appears to be coming from a specific location within Lincoln County, please report it so it can be checked.

Thank you for helping us stay aware and safe.
