My answer:
English I tends to be World Lit which means you have a vast number of texts you can introduce students to...some Canon classics include Romeo and Juliet, The Odessey (Greek Mythology), Of Mice and Men...unlimited short stories such as The Lottery, Lamb to the Slaughter. I've covered Fahrenheit 451 and The Giver as well as To.Kill A Mockingbird...again these are all Classic Canon texts.
I also have a vast classroom library containing tons of YA novels that have come out over the years, as well as memoirs, biographical texts and personal narratives.
The most important things to remember are the following:
1. We DONT Teach Texts, We Teach Skills
So anything grade appropriate will work.
2. Variety is the key to success. Make sure they are exposed to a wide range of texts (genre and complexity)
3. Speaking of complexity make sure to meet kids where they are and scaffold up to where they need to be.
4. Make sure they are reading and writing EVERY DAY!
5. Lastly, let them see the joy in you and how much you love what you do. That joy will transfer to them. So read with them, share your excitement about different texts, model writing and reading..and learn with them!
Hope this helps!
