Meet Keira! 🌲🤘🏽

“Forestry has strengthened my love of the outdoors immensely. Getting to work outside, with my dog, in some of the most beautiful places in Northern California has been an incredible experience. As a Forestry Tech/ Timber Cruiser for a local forestry consultant, Hohman & Associates, my days vary between doing inventory cruising, THP & NTMP layout and soon we will be doing Northern Spotted Owl surveys. I am currently attending College of the Redwoods () and pursuing my degree in Forestry & Natural Resources as well. I’ve been lucky to serve as the Forestry Club President where I’ve gotten to work with local organizations as well as become a member of SAF and attend the 2023 national conference. I’m a born and raised Humboldt County local and have learned more about our local environment in the last 2 years I’ve been in forestry than my previous 3 decades enjoying time in nature. I’m looking forward to building a career in helping steward our forests for generations to enjoy. I’m also trained as a type 2 wildland firefighter to work on prescribed burns with Wailaki Cultural Fire Crew as part of my dedication towards restoring habitat and improving our forests.”

Keira also just recently got hired as a Seasonal Forestry Technician for Humboldt Redwood Company! 👷‍♀️🙌🏽

Meet Lexi! 🌲👷‍♀️

“I used to be a permanent wildland firefighter for the USFS. And for many reasons I left to pursue my Master of Forestry at OSU and my RPF. Through OSU I took a course in Chile where we studied land management in diverse ecosystems without traditional infrastructure such as timber industry and prescribed or naturally occurring fire. I came to work under the Eggleton’s at FRST (legendary Foresters) where I learned traditional timber harvest practices under the CA FPR, carbon sequestration, and post-fire restoration. Now I work as a Project Manager for Vegetation Operations for Mountain Engineering in northern California. I oversee post-fire restoration on the Caldor Fire scar, the team developing the implementation plans, unit layout, roads reconstruction, and inventory for the Spirit G-Z project on the Plumas National Forest, and several PGE utility Vegetation Management Inspector programs along the North Coast and North Valley.”

Meet Sarah McGee & Lady Bird 🌲
Sarah is a Forester III for Green Diamond Resource Co. Lady Bird is new a forester in training. 🐶 Both members of the North Coast Chapter of CA Women in Timber.

“I think my favorite part of my job is starting a new plan and learning about a new set of obstacles and figuring out how we’re going to make it work. There’s always something new to learn in every plan, even if it’s in the same watershed it can be so different. Also, bringing my puppy dog to work.”

Meet Nikki!

“I studied at Algonquin College & graduated from the post secondary Forestry Technician program in 2015. Started wildland firefighting in 2015. I was on an Initial Attack crew based in a Northern Town called Pickle Lake Ontario from 2015-2021. I then packed my bags and drove across Canada from Ontario to British Columbia. Worked on a slashing/Fall and Burn forestry crew on the Island and applied for the Parattack Program for the 2022 season.

I knew that the only Smokejumpers in Canada were based in BC so I figured I’d get a feel for the mountainous terrain. I thought what the heck, I either go back as a Crew Leader in Ontario or maybe see if I got what it takes to hack it with the jumpers.
After being successful with Ground & Jump school I got put on to a Para Crew as a Rookie for the 2022 Fire Season. We have two bases in Canada as the program is fairly new, Fort Saint John British Columbia and Mackenzie. We rolled with 3 person crews last year, but this year we started implementing 4 person crews.

It’s the same job just a different way of transportation. It’s more efficient cause we have a flying warehouse that can get gear & several crews to a target faster. We parachute out of the DC3 Plane with an FS-14 Round and into a safe drop zone near the fire, just as a helicopter would land a normal IA crew. The catch is that we can get into tighter spots than a helicopter because the diameter of our Chute is much smaller. Then our gear gets tossed out under its own parachutes and we get to work fighting the fire.

It’s an amazing environment to be a part of, a big family with an enormous amount of experience and a love for fighting wildfires & keeping communities safe.
I got my dream job and I love it.”
